French Open Tennis 2012: Maria Sharapova Poised To Complete Career Grand Slam

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Maria Sharapova is waltzing through the opening rounds of the 2012 French Open and looks like she is ready to finally break through and win it all.

For all of her accomplishments during her career, Sharapova has never captured a championship at Roland Garros. She has two semifinal appearances—in 2007 and 2011—but has yet to even reach the title match.

On Friday, the Russian star took care of business against Ayumi Morita 6-1, 6-1, and barely broke a sweat during the hour-long match against the Japanese player.

That victory put Sharapova into the third round, where she will face off against Shuai Peng, the No. 28 ranked player in the world.

Peng might give the 25-year-old, three-time Grand Slam winner some more problems than Morita was able to muster, but there is no chance that she will pull the upset.

Maria is in dominant form right now and living up to her World No. 2 ranking. She absolutely crushed her first-round opponent, Alexandra Cadantu, in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

Perhaps it is because she is feeling comfortable on the clay. According to the BBC, the star had this to say about her time on the court and physical fitness:

"

There's no substitute for work - physical work and hours on the court, hours from the court. Also just experience. You learn. Over the years you learn what your body can take, what it can't, what you need, how you recover better. I'm not ever going to be lifting 50lbs weights any time soon - or ever - but it's little things, little muscles, little explosive steps that I feel like I've improved.

"

Sharapova definitely has the experience to win, and the fact that she is in peak shape and understands her body now just makes her odds even more likely.
