French Open 2012: Potential Upsets to Watch for at Roland Garros

Mike MoraitisJun 7, 2018

The 2012 French Open is already almost two rounds old and the field is begining to take shape. It's already becoming crystal clear there are some matches to look out for moving forward.

So why look out for these specific matches?

Because each of these potential showdowns allow for the chance of an upset somewhere down the road at Roland Garros.

Here are some of the matchups that could have the tennis world talking upon their completion.

David Ferrer vs. Rafael Nadal

Ferrer might be the next best clay court player behind Nadal, and that makes him the perfect candidate to knock off the reigning six-time champion.

Anyone beating Nadal at Roland Garros would be an upset, regardless of who it is. Ferrer's power and unique energy on the court gives him a chance to outlast Nadal in what could be a classic semifinal matchup.

It would easily be the biggest win of Ferrer's career, and would be one of the biggest upsets in French Open history.

Roger Federer vs. Tomas Berdych

Berdych is the No. 7 player in the world right now, and one of the stiffest forms of competition Federer will face before the semifinals.

In Madrid two weeks ago, Berdych faced off with Federer in the final and started off strong, winning the first set of the match. However, Federer was able to outlast Berdych to win his third title in Madrid.

Berdych has proved he can outplay Federer in the past, and although he would have his work cut out for him—as would any player—he has the potential to upset one of the greatest players ever to step on a tennis court.

Gilles Simon vs. Novak Djokovic

Simon didn't exactly have his best career win over Brian Baker, but he did show he can compete in a long match after winning in five difficult sets.

But that's behind him now, and Simon has the Roland Garros crowd behind him in his quest to win his first French Open.

If you want to compete with one of the best like Djokovic, you must have the stamina for a long match because it won't be a three-set match by any stretch.

While Simon isn't exactly great on clay, Djoker isn't much better, and that eliminates any advantage Djokovic can get from the surface alone.
