Pittsburgh Steelers Offseason Needs

Jon FisherFeb 3, 2009

The Pittsburgh Steelers are once again Super Bowl Champions.  To be brutally honest with all of my readers, I am surprised we actually won that game.

Don't get me wrong, I am one of the happiest men alive in Pittsburgh, but the team wasn't as good as our 2005 team in my opinion, just saying.  We had the run game, the offensive line, and the return game.  Anyhow, let's get back to the somewhat positive.

I'm going to start this off with a little statistic for all of you.  The Steelers have given up 192 sacks since 2004, which is tops in the National Football League.  So, obviously for the 2009 draft we need the offensive lineman, the return game, and possibly a defensive end.

Now, I've done some research.  As for offensive lineman, we should look at well basically every position.  Alex Mack, a center from Cal is available and is predicted to be our pick by the outstanding arrogant Mel Kiper.  There is also A.Q  Shipleiy from the Penn State.

As for return men, that should be are third to fifth rounder.  I'm thinking a Randle El prototype, or a Dennis Dixon with hands and agility.

Mainly for the draft, I'm sticking to the side of the offensive lineman group.  The Steelers have a history of not being the best drafting team.  Every year there is always a stand out player we draft, whether it is Big Ben Roethlisberger in 04, Troy Polamalu in 03, Santonio Holmes in 07, or Rashard Mendenhall last year.

Just our core draftees, could be a word, aren't up to par.  As I’ve mentioned before, this year we needed an O-line and a return guy(s).

Our record could have been even better if we had those personnel.   I mean, good god Gary Russel and Carey Davis as our return men.  I would have rather had Amos Zeroue back there, or a currently washed up Allen Rossum.

As for the O-Line, a complete disgrace.  Let me break it down for you: Darnell Stapleton, Max Starx, Willie(False Start) Colon, Justin (I almost blew the Super Bowl) Hartwig, and my personal favorite Chris (the Samoan) Kemoiatu,  an absolute disgrace.

I bet USC's offensive line is better than ours.  That is what the draft, free agency, and trade talks are all about.  Since, I already established what they need in the draft, let's talk some free agents and trade talks.

I'm going to make this short and sweet.  We need to grab a versatile player like a Wes Welker, or an Antwaan Randle El.

The Steelers never trade and I've noticed that, but why not pull a Pittsburgh Penguins, make a blockbuster trade and win the Super Bowl again.

Now for the line, we need a leader like Alan Faneca. My uncle knew the Steelers, honestly he did, and they said big number 66 held that line together.  What do you know he did as the line imploded when he left.

The stats prove it.  As for now, the draft hasn't done us too good in the past, instead of a breakout player I want a group of young guys who are all good.

I don't know, but that's just me.

Only time will tell.....
