Women's Only Promotion?

Steven DavisonFeb 3, 2009

Once again, I managed to lose myself in my own thoughts upon watching my new copies of Shimmer (volumes 18 and 20) and I wondered, "Could a women's only wrestling promotion work on a big scale?"

Personally I would love to see Shimmer (or a Shimmer-like promotion) on a national or even a global scale. The talent is there, the booker is there (Dave Prazak) but it is yet to happen.

The main reason I don't think it will happen is because of the fans. Yes, the fans are the main reason why women's wrestling will not take off. This is mainly because of the fans being brainwashed into thinking that all of the women will be wrestling in mud and simply used as T and A.

This is the main reason why the WWE has poster models wrestling (if you can call it that) with the exception of Beth Phoenix (she's good-looking but still something different) and this show is tarnishing the name of "women's wrestling" in its entirety.

But what if? What if these women were given a chance? What if they were given at least a main event in a unisex promotion? Well, this has happened in the form of TNA. We are seeing much more non-stereotypical "divas" and more real women doing what they do best and actually wrestling.

Last year, we saw the height of the TNA Knockout's division grow more and more which is great for wrestling as an entity.

However, with TNA throughout the last six months since the departure of Scott D'Amore, who previously booked the knockouts division, the women's matches have slowly fallen lower and lower on the card position.

Also, the booking style of the matches have slowly changed and turned almost WWE-esque. Which means the women do an entrance then a six or seven-minute match, which out of a two-hour time slot on television, is a travesty and a wasted opportunity.

Even though I digressed from my main point, I do think an all-women's promotion can survive and draw a crowd at a regional level. But as soon as you try to force it on to the everyday casual professional wrestling fan, it is likely to fall short in time.

So ask yourselves would you watch: A women's only promotion without all of the T and A and bikini matches?
