Can We Please Give Georges St. Pierre Some Credit Here?

I am in absolute shock. No, not because GSP wiped the floor with BJ, I knew that would happen. I am in shock because the MMA community, and some mainstream media, are trying to smear GSP's win over BJ. The only thing that should be smeared is Vaseline.

Okay, we get it, GSP had Vaseline applied to his back and chest. We get that doing so is illegal in the sport of MMA. What we should all realize is that Vaseline had nothing to do with GSP's mauling of the best lightweight fighter in the world. Yet, everyone seems to believe it did.

It has cast a huge cloud over what should have been the biggest moment in Georges St. Pierre's career. This was the biggest fight in UFC history. Never had two champions gone head-to-head inside the octagon. Never have I seen so many commercials and so much hype put around a single fight. I literally saw a UFC 94 commercial on the Food Network!

Every MMA fan in the world knew about this fight. Every MMA fan either saw this fight, read the play-by-play on the Internet, or approached a friend the day after the fight to see who won and how they won.

This should have been Georges St. Pierre's crowning moment. The fourth-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world challenged GSP, and GSP responded to that challenge in a thoroughly dominating fashion.

How dare we try to take that moment away from him? How dare we try to smear GSP's legacy the way we have? We should be celebrating. Instead, we are ruining not only GSP's good name, but the good name of MMA.

Do you not realize how big this fight was for the world of MMA? This fight was deemed the biggest fight in MMA history, and with the circumstances surrounding it, I have to agree. This was the Super Bowl of the MMA world. The only difference being that the Super Bowl happens every year, Penn/St. Pierre 2 was a fight years in the making, and a fight that we will never see again.

By repeatedly bringing up the Vaseline usage, we are telling the skeptics that MMA is a joke filled with cheaters. We all know that is not true, but the casual sports fan, who has never indulged in the fastest growing sport in the world, does.

So please, let it go. Let GSP bask in his glory. He never asked his cornerman to grease him up, and I guarantee you that Vaseline had nothing to do with the outcome. You can disagree with me all you want, but remember this.

Every time you accuse GSP of cheating to win, you are cheating GSP of his win. Every time you say the biggest fight in MMA history was ruined, you are ruining the biggest fight in MMA history.
