College Basketball Big Five Power Rankings: Week of Feb. 2

Tyler LambertFeb 1, 2009

1. Duke Blue Devils (19-2, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference)

Sure, the Wake Forest game was a letdown, but they did come back from eight points down late to have a chance to go into overtime. That chance disappeared in an instant, as James Johnson made a layup with .8 seconds remaining. That same Duke team came out with a vengeance against Virginia, forcing 23 turnovers and winning by 25.

Gerald Henderson continued his recent success, scoring 16 of his 18 points during the first half and keying the crucial 27-7 run that gave Duke the advantage it needed. If Duke can play as well as they did against Virginia, then the Final Four is not a stretch for this Duke team.

2. Connecticut Huskies (20-1, 9-1 Big East)

In a span of four days, UConn played and won against two of the least likely Big East Conference champions, and they made those two wins look easy against two NCAA tournament caliber teams.

First, UConn faced off against a very capable DePaul team on the road. Jerome Dyson scored 18 points, and UConn defeated a recently struggling DePaul squad 71-49.

The next test for UConn came against Providence. Hasheem Thabeet recorded his first triple-double (15 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-high 10 blocked shots) and led his Husky team to their ninth straight win.
