Obama: Commander In Chief or Commander In Coach?

mindi greenFeb 1, 2009

I might get some flack for this one and that's ok. I'll say what I like because this is a free country.

For now anyway.

And besides, maybe someone will feel the same way.

Has anyone else noticed how President Obama becoming the Commander In Chief has suddenly become bigger news than anything else? You would think Nick Saban was being acknowledged as Alabama's head football coach or something.

But wait.

Mr. Obama being elected President isn't the only news. We mustn't forget about the Superbowl XLIII after all. Which might actually be getting more news than Mr. Obama.

But not for long.

President Obama must not be taken out of the spotlight for more than five minutes so he thought he would incorporate his views on sports to the world. And, shocker, he's a Steelers fan.

Well, Mr. President, your sceam didn't work, because according to 57% of the US population, they don't care who you root for.

But this isn't the first time President Obama has taken a stance on football issues. Take a look back at the end of the NCAA season this past year with all of the BCS hoopla. Not letting anything take away from his attention, Mr. Obama announced that he too thought something should be done about the current ranking system.

And it wasn't shocking that the very next day, what do I find on the front page of my morning paper but a headline about President Obama's views on the subject.

Front page.

Headline.

People are losing their homes and life savings, there is war in the Mideast (and has been for 2,000 years), pirates are attacking ocean liners, and I can't get my dog to quit crapping in the hall.

But my all means, what the President thinks about sports should be front page news. Good job Mr. Newspaper Editor. Just fantastic.

Admittedly I haven't been around for that many presidents but I don't recall what one says about sports to have made such a to-do-dah over.

So what's next?

A little piece of Championship pie for everyone? We'll just "spread the wealth" among all college football teams?

Note to Florida Gators--Look out if ya'll start getting calls from Rahm Emmanuel.
