Players Championship 2012 Leaderboard: Rickie Fowler Is Only Man to Watch for

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Rickie Fowler's run at The Players Championship is the most compelling reason to watch the final round on Sunday. Without Tiger Woods and other big names in the hunt, the 23-year-old will be the feature attraction.

It's not just because of his vibrant golf duds; the kid is playing very well right now. Pretty Rickie tied for the best round of the tournament on Saturday with a 66 to finish the day nine under par.

He is currently three shots behind Kevin Na, who has been very consistent as he sits at 12-under.

Even with the three shot disadvantage, I believe Fowler will catch Na.

Na doesn't have a ton of victories in his career. Despite turning pro eight years before Fowler, the 28-year-old has only captured one win on tour.

Fowler has one win on tour as well, it came just last week at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte. The momentum has carried over to the TPC and Fowler is officially hot.

The way he's playing right now makes it seem as though this tournament may be the site for his second victory. Fowler is connecting on almost 80 percent of his GIR, which is tops in the field.

Four of the last eight winners at TPC have been tied or first in that category. Fowler is also putting well, averaging 1.7 putts per green.

Combine that with the long hitting off the tee that you always get with Fowler (averaging 294.3 yards per drive) and those stats equate to a kid putting it all together.

The scores are proving this notion as he has played progressively better as the tournament has gone on.

On Thursday he shot a 72, he followed that with a 68 on Friday, and then he exploded for the 66 yesterday. If Fowler shoots 68 or better on Sunday—and I believe he will—he will seize the day and capture his second win on the PGA Tour.
