Urban Meyer: College Football Coach Of The Year

There are more than a few coaches that deserve the infamous College Football Fever Coach of the Year Award, but after hours of deliberation the award goes to Urban Meyer, head coach of the Florida Gators. Surprised?

It’s no secret that most Coach of the Year awards are bestowed upon those who accomplish more with less, but let’s be serious.

Like the Academy Awards, to be nominated or praised by the critics is one thing, but winning the Oscar is still the ultimate prize, regardless of the amount of talent ot one’s disposal. 

Should Daniel Day-Lewis or Tom Hanks be penalized because they are usually surpassing their fellow thespians with more gripping performances?

Similarly, we are so used to consistent coaches like Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, and Jim Tressell doing well that many voters pass them by. The end result—someone fresh and hip on the scene receives the accolades.

Hold that vote!

We can certainly appreciate a breakout performance or honor someone’s best work, but the Academy should not grace Keanu Reeves with an Oscar because he suddenly gets a wild hair to star in an obscure melodrama where he plays a recovering alcoholic who coaches the first Brazilian weightlifter at an all-girls Catholic school.

Of course, this is after he loses his entire family in a hay ride accident and is eventually able to find himself through the inspiration of the Brazilian weightlifter.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shouldn’t and neither should we. Therefore, we should not overlook the amazing and victorious season completed by Urban Meyer. 

This was Meyer’s second BCS National Title in three years and second SEC Championship.

After descending from Utah, Meyer has made the improbable very probable by implementing a highly aggressive spread offense in the SEC.

Many doubters snickered at the idea of the spread offense’s effectiveness in the hard-nosed, smash-mouth league that is the Southeastern Conference, but it worked, and Meyer is riding high.

Yes, the Gators have Heisman winner Tim Tebow.

Regardless, all masterminds must have the right pieces in place to be fully successful.
