Let The Fans Decide: Minnesota Vikings, First Round Selection

Tanner ThomsJan 31, 2009

Just two and a half months remaining, until the 2009 NFL Draft. I'm in the works of a brand new mock draft, with five rounds, that should be out sometime in February. Be sure to check it out.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about who the Vikings will take with the second overall pick. A quarterback? A wide receiver? A right tackle? A cornerback? There are so many options that are available.

I made a Minnesota Vikings first round focus, a month or so back. This time I'm leaving it up to you guys to decide.

Team Needs:
Quarterback:
The quarterback position was the reason for Minnesota's downfall last season. The 2008 season started out with Tarvaris Jackson at the helm. After only two games, he was benched in favor of Gus Frerotte. Yes, Gus Frerotte, the guy who headbutted a wall during a game, taking him out for the rest of it. The season ended with Tarvaris Jackson starting in the playoffs, against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wide Receiver:
The Vikings filled a need last off-season with Bernard Berrian. Bernard, finished the season with 48 receptions, 964 yards, and seven touchdowns. Sidney Rice, a second year player from South Carolina, was an absolute disappointment all year. He appeared in 15 games, and was never fully 100% healthy.

Right Tackle:
Artis Hicks and Ryan Cook split time at right tackle all year long. Neither one of them were very consistent. Ryan Cook is a natural center, where he played at in college. I've been saying for months now that Minnesota needs a consistent right tackle. They do, just maybe not in the first round.

Cornerback:
Many mocks drafts have showed the Vikings selecting Vontae Davis in the first round. Although he was a good college player, I'm not so sure if he will be in the pros. Antoine Winfield made the Pro Bowl, after one of the best seasons of his career. Cedric Griffin has been disappointing since the Vikings drafted him. Last year though, Cedric was able to maintain long pass plays.

Here are a few likely options, avaible at pick number 22:
1. Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver, Florida
2. Hakeem Nicks, Wide Receiver, North Carolina
3. Josh Freeman, Quarterback, Kansas State
4. Duke Robinson, Tackle/Guard, Oklahoma
5. Eugene Monroe, Offensive Tackle, Virginia
6. Vontae Davis, Cornerback, Illinois
7. D.J. Moore, Cornerback, Vanderbilt

I personally, would love to see Percy Harvin in purple and gold. He's a playmaker and can be a great decoy for Bernard Berrian. Percy also is a very talented kick returner. He's last years, DeSean Jackson.

Now, tell me what you think, sports fans! Your percentage of votes will go towards my first round pick for the 2009 mock draft.

Every one to two days, I will post another article for the next round selection. Make sure, to check it out.
