Andy Pettitte: Left-Hander to Be Called Up to Pitch on Sunday Against Mariners

Kenny DeJohnJun 7, 2018

Andy Pettitte will be called up to start Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners, tweets Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

Brian Cashman announced the move Tuesday afternoon, but no announcement was made as to who will be bumped from the rotation.

Pettitte has made four starts in the minors while attempting his comeback, posting an 0-2 record with a 3.71 ERA.

He has gone 80-plus pitches in back-to-back outings, which has apparently been enough to convince the Yankees brass that he's ready to make his season debut.

Pettitte has been far from dominant in his stint in the minors, but the fact that he was able to go 80-plus pitches in back-to-back starts is reassuring.

The last thing the team needs is for him to break down after just one long start.

Although it has not been announced who will get the boot from the rotation, it's likely that rookie David Phelps will shift back into the bullpen.

Phil Hughes is coming off his best start of the season, while Phelps has yet to prove himself as a major-league starter.

He's been effective out of the bullpen, and the loss of Mariano Rivera leaves the Yankees short one reliable arm.

Pettitte's debut will certainly be monitored closely by the team, and it could signal a turnaround for the struggling Yankees.
