Super Bowl XLIII Betting Total: What Can We Learn from BCS Championship Game?

Walker DanielsJan 28, 2009

As they say, history has a tendency of repeating itself unless we learn from it.

As we examine the Super Bowl XLIII betting over/under, on many levels it looks eerily similar to the BCS Championship Game total.

In the BCS Championship Game, many bettors felt that the offenses would dominate and that the defenses would be constantly wheezing with their hands on their hips.

But Championship Games are rarely shootouts and often after such a long delay between games, both teams experiencing a feeling out process.

The 2009 FedEx BCS Championship Game was 0-0 after one quarter. If you have over 70 in that game, you could tear up your tickets nice and early.

With the Super Bowl XLIII betting total of 46.5, a lot of people are expecting the Arizona Cardinals to put up some serious points in this game, kind of like they did in their previous three playoff games (scoring 30+ points in each contest).

But the Steelers' are the No. 1 ranked scoring defense in the NFL—don't expect them to get rolled up.

Expect another feeling out process in the first quarter as both teams simply try to calm their nerves and avoid mistakes. By that point, the total of 46.5 should look like an unattainable number and Super Bowl betting handicappers who took the under should be looking smart.

The total is about 46.5 but if you get the Las Vegas Super Bowl spread, you can maybe find a 47.
