Kentucky Derby 2012: Daddy Long Legs and Other Long Shots to Bet on
The big money at the 2012 Kentucky Derby will go to the people brave enough to take a chance on long shots like Daddy Long Legs.
Bodemeister and Union Rags are the safe way to go at 5-1 odds, but for those looking for a more exciting experience, here are five underdogs that have the best chance at taking the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Daddy Long Legs: 35-1
This Kentucky-bred horse trained by Aidan O'Brien posted an impressive 1 1/4-length victory at the UAE Derby in Dubai.
He is a son of Scat Daddy, who took part in the Derby in 2007, but retired afterwards due to injuries sustained in the race.
Now three years old, Daddy Long Legs and jockey Colm O'Donoghue are ready to do what Scat Daddy never could—finish first at Churchill Downs.
Done Talking: 30-1
Done Talking is trainer Hamilton Smith's first Triple Crown horse and both trainer and colt are ready to make a splash in Kentucky.
Smith has spent much of his career in Maryland and chose Sheldon Russell, the top jockey in the state, to take the reigns on May 5.
This horse will be the pride of the Old Line State and that may provide the spark for a big upset.
Sabercat: 35-1
Trainer Steve Asmussen is a fixture at the Derby and will send out both Sabercat and Daddy Nose Best on race day.
Sabercat is more of a long shot and will be jockeyed by Corey Nakatani. This colt was sired by Bluegrass Cat, who finished second at Churchill Downs in 2006, and his broodmare sire was Forty Niner, who took second in the race in 1988.
Crossing as runner-up is in this horse's blood and those who bet Sabercat to take second stand to make a killing.
Liaison: 35-1
Bob Baffert's other colt, Bodemeister, will steal most of the headlines leading up to the race, but any horse brought up by the iconic trainer has a chance to win the Derby.
Liaison turned in several disappointing races at Santa Anita, but good showings at other parks have been enough to earn Baffert's confidence.
Martin Garcia will jockey this horse and no long shot is a better bet than Liaison.
