Messi and Ronaldo Watch: Champions League Misses, La Liga Laughers

Michael CummingsApr 30, 2012

This week in B/R's Messi and Ronaldo Watch, we have something a bit different.

It's a bit different because it doesn't happen often. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo missed penalties, and both of their teams suffered shocking losses.

Of course, that didn't stop the scoring. Both players also found the back of the net multiple times in the past week, and we've got all the highlights right here.

Messi Misses

Barcelona drew 2-2 with Chelsea at Camp Nou on Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal.

The result sent Chelsea to the final in Munich.

Barca led 2-0 in the first half through goals from Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta. Messi set up Iniesta's goal in the 43rd minute.

With the score 2-1 early in the second half, Messi missed a penalty, hitting the crossbar with Chelsea keeper Petr Cech beaten.

Had he scored, the penalty would have put Barca ahead 3-1, and had the match finished that way, Barcelona would have advanced to the final.

Messi also hit the post later in the second half (video at left) before Chelsea equalized late.

Real Madrid also crashed out of the Champions League midweek, losing a penalty shootout against Bayern Munich.

Jose Mourinho's team won the second leg of their semifinal 2-1, but the result left the teams level at 3-3 on aggregate after extra time.

In the penalty shootout, Ronaldo missed his spot kick as Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer dived the correct way to save low and to his right. Bayern won the shootout 3-1.

In regular time, Ronaldo gave Real an early 2-0 lead with goals in the sixth (penalty) and 14th minutes.

Back in La Liga, Ronaldo scored the opener as Real Madrid blanked Sevilla 3-0 at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo scored in the 19th minute before hitting the post later in the half with a free kick.

He now has 43 league goals this season and 57 in all competitions.

Real now lead Barca by seven points with three matches left. A win Wednesday at Athletic Bilbao would clinch the league title.
