NHL Trade Speculation: Jarome Iginla and Others Who Need to Move on to Win a Cup
The NHL is full of players who are loyal to their teams. It is perhaps the last league where players who start and end their career with the same team isn't yet out of the ordinary.
There does also exist, as there does in every sport, those players that are among the greats in the game and have won several awards to prove they belong among the elite.
The only award these players haven't won is the Stanley Cup and despite their loyalties to their long-time teams, without a move, these players are unlikely to win one.
Jarome Iginla
1 of 7Jarome Iginla may be the most notable player of our age to not win a cup since Ray Bourque's famous journey.
Iginla has been captain of the Calgary Flames for years and brought them to within one game of a championship just before the lockout.
The Flames have not been back since and it does not seem likely that the Flames will be able to make a serious push for the cup in the immediate future.
Iginla may or may not get moved to a contending team, but if he wishes to win a cup during his career, then he will need to move elsewhere.
Roberto Luongo
2 of 7Roberto Luongo is out of favor in Vancouver and wasn't able to finish the series against the Los Angeles Kings.
Luongo is capable of playing as one of the most elite goalies in the game, but he has yet to make that turn into a championship.
It hasn't worked out in Vancouver, perhaps a change of location can help Luongo find his way to a cup.
Daniel Alfredsson
3 of 7Another long-time captain on a team that is a ways away from being a cup contender.
True that the Senators were far more competitive than anybody thought they would be during this season, but an eight seed is still a long way away from winning a cup.
Alfredsson would be unlikely to ask for a trade in order to win a cup, but the Senators should think about trading him as an act of kindness to their captain for his service to the team.
Joe Thornton
4 of 7Joe Thornton is one of the better leaders on the Sharks and in the NHL, but he has yet to capture a Stanley Cup.
The Sharks have come very close in the past couple of seasons to breaking through into the finals, but could never get all the way through.
The Sharks are now one of the older teams in the NHL with some young talent, but the team is just too old to mount enough of a push.
With their cap number within $2 million, the Sharks may need to move some big contracts in order to stay competitive.
Thornton may need to go elsewhere to find his cup.
David Legwand
5 of 7David Legwand isn't one of the biggest names in the NHL today, but he is one of the more prolific as far as stints with one team.
Legwand was the first ever draft pick of the Nashville Predators and has been with them throughout their existence.
He went along with some pretty bad teams and is now enjoying some relevancy with Predators of late.
It is possible that this year could be the year for the Predators, but with a couple of their best players destined for free agency, Legwand may be heading elsewhere to find his championship.
Shane Doan
6 of 7Shane Doan has been through a lot with his team during their time in Phoenix.
This year was a good year in Phoenix with the team's first division title since moving and its first playoff series victory, but Phoenix is not likely to win the cup.
Doan is another brilliant team leader that has never had a team that could legitimately compete for a cup.
Doan won't win a cup in the desert, and will need to move elsewhere to win a championship.
Ryan Smyth
7 of 7Ryan Smyth is the ultimate teammate and won't win a cup while in Edmonton.
He may be unlikely to leave Edmonton, especially after making a big deal about being traded back so that he could return to the place he loves so much.
The potential of winning a cup could be a powerful motivator to leave, however, it is unlikely he will go elsewhere.
