Hopkins vs. Dawson Video: Executioner Fails to Deliver in Boring Match

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

The WBC and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Title fight between Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and Chad Dawson was far from exciting.

In the end, The Executioner failed to deliver a performance worthy of his pedigree and lost a majority decision: Two judges scored it 117-111, and a third scored it 114-114.

For those of you who paid to watch the fight, I am sorry for your loss.

The only real damage Hopkins was able to do was from an inadvertent head butt that opened up a sizable cut over Dawson's left eye.

After the fight, Dawson didn't sound too pleased with Hopkins' approach.

Via ESPN:

"

My head is hurting from all the head-butts. I've got to give him a lot of credit. He's a future Hall of Famer, he's a hell of a fighter. But he's a dirty fighter. But if you can get through 12 rounds with him, you can get through anything.

"

Dawson didn't necessarily dominate the match either, but he did turn the heat up towards the end and landed some devastating body shots in Round 8 and Round 10.

In the end, Dawson is the new light heavyweight champion by virtue of Hopkins' inability to do anything worth mentioning on this page. He couldn't land many punches of note and spent most of the fight trying to avoid getting his bell rung by wrapping his arms around Dawson in clenches.

Dawson's approach was methodical and didn't inspire much excitement from the crowd, but he did enough to win, and I guess that's all that matters from his perspective.

Hopkins needs to take a close look at the tape after this disastrous showing. He looked lifeless out there, and although his career has been full of highlights and triumphs, the ageless one finally looked old and washed up.
