WWE Rumors: Extreme Rules Results, John Cena and Monday's Top WWE News

Adam WellsJun 5, 2018

There are moments in WWE when you can't help but scratch your head at the stupidity of the creative team.

Extreme Rules had one of those instances, though it would be hard to complain with a main event that was as great, unique and compelling as any WWE has done in a long time.

To have Brock Lesnar lose to John Cena in his first match back is idiotic. It gets compounded by the fact that Cena is going to be taking some time off. The winner was strange, but everything that came before it was pretty spectacular.

We will have all the latest news and rumors from behind the scenes in WWE, tell you what happened with Cena and what he will be doing.

EXTREME RULES GETS SAVED BY VICIOUS MAIN EVENT

Before Cena and Lesnar got in the ring, Extreme Rules was a rather bland show.

CM Punk and Chris Jericho was fine but nothing special. Daniel Bryan and Sheamus was the best match up until the end, though it wasn't great.

Then we saw just how Lesnar will be used: Like the a** kicker he said he was.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Why did Cena go over Lesnar?

Our Take: Given the way everything played out, the only thing that I can think of is Vince McMahon didn't want his biggest star losing to someone who made his name in UFC.

That's just how this man operates.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Bloodbaths

The most shocking part of the match was the blood.

We thought there might be a lot of it at WrestleMania in the Hell In a Cell match between Undertaker and Triple H, but last night was as close to a bloodbath as you will get in WWE today.

JOHN CENA IS TAKING HIS BALL AND GOING HOME

Cena has been a mainstay in WWE for years.

He's the face of the company and the idea of a show without him makes Vince McMahon's body clinch so tight. Following last night's brutal beating, Cena told the world that he was going away for a while.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Why is Cena leaving?

Our Take: WWE is a brutal place to work. Your body goes through so much and there's almost no time off for anyone, so you have to take small breaks. His body has reportedly been banged up for some time and he needs time now before something bad happens.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Jorts

In the past when Cena has been "fired" or talked about going away, WWE always brought him back because they feel that one show without him will cause business to collapse. He likely forced their hand this time around and it's going to force WWE to try new things in the interim.

Of course, this could just be another WWE ruse and he comes back in a week.

CM PUNK READY FOR BIG PROMOTIONAL PUSH

While WWE has shown good faith in CM Punk since last summer, there has been a lack of mainstream promotion for the WWE champion.

Everything tends to focus on John Cena (as it should), with big players like The Miz doing more leg work.

That isn't going to be the case any longer.

Question on Everybody's Mind: What took WWE so long to get behind Punk?

Our Take: As idiotic as this may sound, it's probably his look. Vince McMahon has a certain way that he wants his biggest stars to look. Punk has a unique style all his own, but it's definitely not the corporate look that Vinny Mac wants.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Straight Edges

While most of WWE's efforts to promote someone mainstream don't often work due to poor pushes on Raw or SmackDown, Punk has built up enough clout over the last nine months to get a real shot to succeed.

EDGE MOVING ON TO LIFE AFTER WWE

When most WWE stars retire, they are given some kind of legends deal that will keep paying them even if they don't appear on television each week.

Edge doesn't appear to be interested in that kind of contract, according to a report.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Is Edge making the right decision?

Our Take: It's an interesting career move, just because he likely won't be able to keep the Edge name to advertise any movies or things like that he does outside of WWE. Perhaps he wants to branch out beyond just the wrestling persona that he has built over the last 13 years.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Failed Negotiations

This move in no way means that Edge will never appear on WWE television again, unless Vince McMahon feels so spurned by these negotiations that he refuses to work with him again.

Somehow I don't see that being the case, but you never know what the Chairman is thinking.
