2012 NFL Draft Grades: Teams That Filled Needs at Amazing Value

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Filling needs at the best value possible is the name of the game for any NFL draft.

After three days and 253 picks, these teams did that better than any other club.

The Colts had one of my favorite drafts because not only were they able to find players they needed at surprisingly great value, but it was obvious that they're building an atmosphere conducive to success around Andrew Luck.

Grabbing his college teammate Coby Fleener in Round 2 was ideal and nabbing the supremely skilled Dwayne Allen in Round 3 was even more impressive.

I kept thinking about to how easy the transition seemed last year for Cam Newton with Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen.

Though Luck won't be dealing with veteran tight ends, he has two big, seemingly reliable targets that should become his favorite options in Indianapolis. T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazill in Rounds 3 and 6 were the other receiving weapons selected by the Colts.

Hilton's a gritty slot guy with electric agility and quickness. Brazill's a fluid route-runner who should excel down the middle of the field as well.

Moving to a 3-4 defense, the team needed a immovable nose tackle. Although he dealt with injuries in college, Josh Chapman, a mountain of man, represented fantastic value at in the fifth round.

The same goes for running back Vick Ballard, who was the pick after Chapman in Round 5.

How did some of the prospects Buffalo drafted fall to them? Seriously. Cordy Glenn was a top-25 talent on the draft boards of most respected draft analysts and the Bills grabbed him in the second round at No. 41 overall.

Though T.J. Graham may have been selected a bit higher than people expected, Greg Cosell called him "the most vertically explosive receiver in the draft" and compared him to the Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Wallace—precisely what the Bills needed.

Ron Brooks isn't a household name because he played behind Patrick Peterson, Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu at LSU, but he exudes athleticism and has a great chance to become a quality corner i the NFL.

Florida State offensive tackle Zebrie Sanders in all the way in Round 5 rounded off a terrific haul for Buffalo.

Everyone's raving about the Eagles' draft and rightfully so. Fletcher Cox headlined the group in Round 1, but from Rounds 2-4 they made a killing.

Mychal Kendricks is a wickedly athletic outside linebacker who'll make an instant impact on their defense. Vinny Curry represented awesome value in Round 3, and he'll team up Jason Babin and Trent Cole to formulate a deadly pass-rushing trio.

Nick Foles has prototypical quarterback size and arm strength and is great insurance for the oft-injured Michael Vick

Brandon Boykin fell to Round 4 because of a few injuries, but he has natural athleticism and speed and fared well in the best conference in college football over the last few seasons.

In Round 6 they snagged Iowa wide receiver Marvin McNutt, who was a productive guy for the Hawkeyes for three years and has good size at 6'3''.
