Utah Undefeated...Now The Mountation West Wants Respect

When I was in high school I was told to begin with the end in mind. You set your sights on a goal you wish to achieve and you do whatever necessary to get there. And many could say that is what Utah did this past season. In order for them to make any noise they would have to win, not just win, but WIN.

The only way to do that in Utah’s situation is to go undefeated which they did and they eventually played Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and then being ranked in some polls as high as no. 3 in the nation. Now I will say Utah deserved everything that they worked so hard for. Beating everyone in front of them no matter how close it was or could have been. I will not down play their success this season at all. But at the same time you have to look at their schedule and see who they have played.

They played teams such as Wyoming, Michigan, UNLV, Utah State, San Diego State and New Mexico were on their schedule and they had a combined record of 21-51, with UNLV being the best of the bunch at 5-7.  I will say that my Football coach told us before every game, “It’s not our fault they are on our schedule, but therefore they must die” so I will apply the same exact mentality and thinking. It is not Utah’s fault they played 6 out of 12 regular season teams with a losing record.

You cannot fault them for that, they strapped up every Saturday and played and most importantly won and eventually received an invite to play Alabama in the sugar bowl and beat them by 20.

But now they feel that they deserve an automatic bid to a BCS Bowl. I don’t think they deserve an outright bid to a bowl game just yet, especially after this season, due to their “inflated” schedule and lack of competition.

I think that the NCAA should take their request into consideration because Utah has gone undefeated at 12-0 back in the 04-05 season. I think they should “beef” up there schedule and put much harder competition.

The conference games will be easy since it seems that only Utah, TCU and BYU are the only dominant teams that are in the Mountain West. And they should do this year in and year out to prove that they belong with the big boys of the BCS. And if they do that and come out on top I will be the first to congratulate them and hop on the band wagon of them getting their own bid.

Because I think that everybody should be able to represent their conference in the bowl games if they have earned the right. It is only fair, as well as the right thing to do. Because if they do end up getting beaten like they stole something then that will negate their whole argument as well as diminish all of their chances of doing so again.

Even though I am not sure if you can take a bid away from a conference once it has been given. But nonetheless if they keep winning and upsetting teams who don’t take them seriously then they should make some noise.
