2012 NFL Draft Predictions: Chris Rainey and Specialists Teams Should Draft Late
As the NFL draft winds down, there are still players that will provide value for teams. If the player is still on the board after the first two days, chances are the player has perceived deficiencies.
Still, these players can help teams. That is especially the case, if the players are specialists.
Does a team need a KR, nickel CB or even an elite K?
You just may find it in the final hours of the draft. Here are a few examples:
Chris Rainey, RB, Florida
Rainey is blazing fast. He could be an excellent kick returner and third down RB. He is only 5'8" 180 pounds, but small backs like Darren Sproles and Jacquizz Rodgers have had success.
Neither of them is quite as fast as Rainey.
If a team takes Rainey and plugs him in the right spots, he could be a mixture of Sproles and former Chiefs' return man, Donte Hall.
Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
Minnifield is a quality prospect at CB, but micro-fracture surgery has caused him to slip to the later rounds. If a team is patient with him, Minnifield can be a solid player when healthy.
He is tough, physical and has great ball skills.
He is even strong enough to possibly move to safety, if he has lost speed. He would be a solid pick in the sixth or seventh round.
Carson Wiggs, K, Purdue
Kickers get no love, until they nail big kicks to win games. Wiggs has that type of potential.
At Purdue, Wiggs was a P and K. He has a strong leg, but his versatility could save a roster spot.
As a K, he made just under 80 percent of his field-goal attempts. As a P, his stats were more modest, with a punt average under 40 yards per punt.
Still, Wiggs is a solid K, and an adequate option at P in a pinch.
