Mr. Irrelevant 2012: Why Last Prospect Drafted Must Have Outstanding Measurables
If you are trying to find a complete player who can start from day one with the final pick of the NFL draft, you are going about it the wrong way.
In reality, you have a much better chance of grabbing a steal if you draft a situational player with great measurables who can either fly down the field or hit hard.
While it's unlikely you'll find your next superstar with Mr. Irrelevant, you do have a much better chance of success if you draft a player thinking about how to fit him into different packages.
Drafting a lightning-fast player who may be raw is one of the ways to go. You simply send him flying down the sideline and if he gets open, you throw the ball to him. You can also use such a player as a return man, which has the potential to literally change games for you. On defense, adding a quick pass-rusher is another option. Set him up on the edge, wind him up and let him go.
Frankly, it isn't rocket science when drafting in the last round, but sometimes NFL teams, scouts and experts will make it so. Yes, every once in a while a promising, potential starter drops, but, particularly when it comes to the last pick of the draft, the best strategy is generally finding a specialist.
If a player's only downfall is that he's raw and inconsistent, that can be taught. Speed cannot be taught. That's why when a prospect with outstanding measurables goes undrafted, I shake my head. You are not drafting him to be a star at the level, unless the prospect is a legit steal. You are drafting him to make an impact on your football team, in one way or another. If you play your cards right, that impact can single-handedly win games for you.
A lot of people have been looking at the last pick of the draft the wrong way all these years. That is why Mr. Irrelevant has become Mr. Irrelevant.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Mr. Irrelevant can turn into Mr. Spectacular if he's drafted for a specific purpose.
