2012 NFL Draft: Brian Quick Finds New Home in St. Louis

John HooperApr 27, 2012

The first player from the Football Championship Subdivision came off the board in the second round on Friday night, with Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick selected as the 33rd overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.

Quick becomes the highest draft pick to ever come out of the tradition-rich Appalachian State football program, and marks the second wide receiver to garner a second round selection in the NFL Draft.

The highest draft pick to come out of Appalachian State prior to Friday night was linebacker Dino Hackett, who was taken 35th  overall by the Kansas City Chiefs  in the 1986 NFL Draft.

Prior to the 2012 NFL Draft, former Appalachian State wide receiver Dexter Jackson was taken 58 th by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the ’08 Draft, which was previously the second-highest draft pick ever taken from the Appalachian State football program. Jackson is currently on the New York Jets practice squad.

Ironically, it was both Jackson and Quick who played a major role in Appalachian State’s 2007 historic upset of No. 5 Michigan. Jackson caught three passes for 92 yards and a pair of TDs, while Quick blocked a Jason Gingell field goal late in the fourth quarter to set up the Mountaineers’ game-winning drive in the 34-32 win.

Quick set new program career marks for receptions (220), yards (3,418), TD catches (31) and yards per catch. Quick had a strong senior campaign, which saw him haul in 71 passes for 1,096 yards and 11 TDs (15.4 YPR) last fall.

Quick becomes the first Appalachian State player to call St. Louis home since Dexter Coakley finished out a solid NFL career as a Ram in 2006.

The 2011 NFL Draft saw Appalachian State set a school record with three players selected in the draft, as defensive back Mark LeGree and offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore were both fifth round selections, while D.J. Smith was taken by defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay in the sixth round.
