NFL Draft 2012: What Jonathan Martin Pick Means for Miami Dolphins Defense

James DudkoApr 27, 2012

The Miami Dolphins' decision to pick Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin was solid, but it ignored the need for another edge pass-rusher to partner with Cameron Wake.

As effective as Martin could be if he slides over to right tackle, opposite the great Jake Long, Miami's new 4-3 front needs more weapons.

Wake is an outstanding sack artist, but he needs help.

Without a bookend threat to account for, opposing blocking schemes will be able simply to slide the protection over to Wake. This could diminish the production of the ex-CFL star.

The Dolphins passed on the chance to take a player like Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry, who would have been a perfect fit for the new scheme.

With Wake and tackles Jared Odrick, Randy Starks and Paul Soliai already in place, adding another pass-rushing end would give the Dolphins one of the strongest front-four rotations in the league.

In an AFC East division loaded with the likes of Tom Brady and Ryan Fitzpatrick, getting pressure on the QB will be key for the Dolphins in 2011. They can't afford to ignore the end position with one of their two third-round selections.

Boise State's Tyrone Crawford and Virginia's Cam Johnson are prospects worth considering.

However, it still feels as though the Dolphins missed a great chance by passing on Curry.
