Russell Wilson: Teams That Should Draft Star QB in Round 3

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Russell Wilson isn't going to last beyond Round 3 in the 2012 NFL draft.

Wilson doesn't get enough respect in the media, but I guarantee NFL teams value his abilities.

Despite being only 5'11", Wilson possesses a cannon for an arm and is capable of hitting receivers in stride with pin-point accuracy. He's faster than Andrew Luck and Cam Newton and reminds me of a cross between Drew Brees and Michael Vick.

I wrote post earlier in the scouting process detailing why he's going to be successful in the NFL. He's an underrated stud that's going to be a special player at the next level.

Here are the teams that should draft Wilson in the third round before it's too late.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 68

What better way to motivate a young quarterback than to bring in another one to push him along?

Josh Freeman looked like he was going to become one of the best young quarterbacks in the league a couple of years ago. Then, he completely fell apart in 2011.

Whether it was due to incompetent coaching or off-the-field issues, I know not. The thing that's important for the Bucs is to make sure they have a backup plan in case he fails to turn things around in 2012.

After Freeman, they have Dan Orlovsky and Brett Ratliff, neither of whom inspire much confidence.

Wilson would push Freeman to be better in the best-case-scenario, and at worst, he gets his chance to prove to the league that he's worthy of becoming a full-time starter earlier than anyone anticipated.

Buffalo Bills at No. 71

Via his Twitter account, we learned that Wilson has visited with the Bills recently, and they seem to be interested in him as a backup for Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Buffalo would be a good landing spot for Wilson. Chan Gailey is an offensive guru that will greatly improve upon the already-impressive set of skills he possesses, and he will be a nice insurance policy against the possibility that Fitzpatrick continues to struggle like he did at the end of last year.

Wilson would soak up the info, and we already know he can assimilate into a new offense in record time after his flawless transition from North Carolina State to Wisconsin.

The Chiefs currently have three quarterbacks on their roster—none of whom is a true No. 1 quarterback.

Matt Cassel is serviceable and manages to shine every once in a while, but he's not going to scare anyone from week-to-week.

Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi are career backups, at best.

Wilson could challenge Cassel for the starting role, and at the very worst, he would serve as a reliable backup.

The Chiefs have a talented roster on both sides of the ball, and the only real aspect they're missing is a true leader at the quarterback position. Wilson would give them a fighting chance to challenge the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers for the AFC West crown.
