2012 NFL Draft Predictions: 2nd-Round Stars That Will Shine
If you are anything like me, you love the NFL draft. The 2012 class is spectacular because it has everything you are looking for as a fan. Two franchise quarterbacks, great receivers, tough offensive and defensive linemen, solid running backs, and don't forget the talented linebackers and cornerbacks.
This draft is loaded, however, what most people fail to realize is that championship teams are made in rounds two through seven. There are a ton of players that are still on the board with great talent.
On the offensive side of the ball, there are plenty of receivers left. Notably, Alshon Jeffery, a talented WR out of South Carolina. This kid is a beast and will make moves at the next level. He has a bit of an attitude though, which is probably why he is still available. He is 6’4” and 230 pounds and is unbelievable catching the ball. In 2010 he was a standout player who had 88 grabs for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns. Point blank, whoever takes this player will have immediately gained a threat on the offensive side of the ball. Look for a team like the Saint Louis Rams to draft him around the 39th pick.
Staying with the theme of offense, I see Jonathan Martin as another player who is loaded with talent. This is another player that could be targeted for the Rams. He blocked for Andrew Luck, and always kept number 12's jersey clean.
Offensive tackle is very important on any successful team, and this is a position that may people overlook. With Martin you are getting a very smart and physical football player. He has shown that he can get it done at a high-level, and if you are a GM, he is a steal in the second round.
Looking at the defensive side, you have to look at Courtney Upshaw out of Alabama. What negatives do you have with a two-time champion?
Not too many.
This guy is an absolute steal in the second round, and absolutely dominated at Alabama. At 6’2” and 272 pounds, there is a question to what position he would play.
Is he big enough for defensive end? Too small for a linebacker?
Either way, he is a great player and has amazing potential.
Last, but not least, is Nick Toon, a wide receiver out of Wisconsin. Toon has all the right tools to be great at the NFL level. At 6’3” and 220, he has the size to be an excellent possession receiver. He won’t wow you with his speed, but he is a great route-runner and can make all the catches. Any GM looking for a receiver should take a hard look at Toon.
