Andrew Luck: Colts Must Give No. 1 Pick Firepower by Going Offense in Round 2
The Indianapolis Colts had the easiest decision of any team in the first round but are now stuck with one of the hardest in Round 2.
Andrew Luck is now their QB, but for a team that has been absolutely gutted, that’s not good enough. Sure, 33-year-old Reggie Wayne is still on the team, but other than that there are absolutely zero impact players at Luck’s disposal. I’m beginning to wonder if Wayne is even considered an “impact player” at this point.
With the incredible amount of pressure on Luck’s shoulders, owner Jim Irsay has to give him more weapons.
With the second pick in Round 2 (34), there are plenty of great options.
The first is a very obvious one. Tight end Coby Fleener, a teammate of Luck's at Stanford, is a wide receiver in a tight end’s body (6’6’’, 245 pounds).
He was Luck’s second-leading receiver in 2011, catching 34 passes for 667 yards and 10 TDs. The Cardinal offense was predicated on play-action, and Fleener was right in the middle of all the action.
Another great pick would be offensive tackle Jonathan Martin, who just happens to be another Stanford grad. He’s a first-round talent who was a victim of one of the stronger drafts of the last decade.
He has great feet to go along with a 6’6’’, 304-pound frame that make him a bear to move. Obviously Martin knows Luck’s tendencies, and the QB would feel an extra sense of comfort with a familiar face blocking his blindside.
Last but not least, wide receiver Stephen Hill of Georgia Tech would give Luck an absolute burner who can break free from a defender on a streak once a game if he plays to his potential. The problem with Hill is that he’s a bit of a raw prospect coming out of the gate.
Assuming the St. Louis Rams shore up their defense with the top pick in Round 2, there are three first-round talents at the Colts' disposal.
Prediction: Jonathan Martin
If Luck doesn’t have time to throw, then a receiving threat is rendered useless. Martin’s inexplicable drop is a head-scratcher. He’s a premiere talent, and the Colts would be getting the most value from their pick if they land Luck’s old teammate.
