Case Keenum: Record-Setting College QB Will Be Lucky to Get Drafted to NFL

Adam WellsJun 3, 2018

Case Keenum set almost every quarterback record imaginable at the University of Houston during his five years at the school. Based on numbers alone, he should at least get a chance to show what he can do in the NFL.

Unfortunately numbers don't tell the whole story with Keenum, and it is going to take a lot for him to get drafted this weekend during the NFL's annual prospect spectacular.

There are obviously some tangible things that Keenum does that all teams like. His arm strength and accuracy are better-than-average tools for him already. The No. 1 thing that teams should look for in a quarterback is accuracy, because so much of the game is based on timing.

That is where the good news for Keenum ends, though. His other raw tools—reading defense, pocket presence, etc.—are all well below-average. He never had to do that during his time at Houston, so he is far behind the eight ball already.

Keenum's size works against him; he is listed at 6'2", 210 pounds, which is very small for an NFL quarterback. His decision making leaves a lot to be desired, though he did make strides last year, throwing just five interceptions in 603 attempts.

Even with the improved interception rate, Keenum still holds on to the ball far too long. He needs to read the defense before the snap, then get rid of the ball quicker.

We talk about delivery and having a quick release as being a critical element for any college quarterback coming out. Keenum has the arm strength to make up for lost timing, but his delivery is long. He starts his hands below his helmet and has to wind up before throwing.

Any talk of Keenum even going to the NFL is going to be based around the fact that he threw for 19,217 yards, 155 touchdowns and completed over 69 percent of his passes. Those are gawdy numbers that no college quarterback can match.

But the key word there is college. Not every great college player has the skills that translate to the next level. Sadly, that is the case with Keenum.
