Kellen Moore: Projecting Where Boise State Product Will Fall in 2012 NFL Draft
If you were to look at this quarterback's stats—3,800 yards, 43 TDs, 9 INTs, 74.3% completion percentage, 13-1 record in his senior season—you would assume he would be a first-round pick in the NFL draft.
Alas, these are Boise State QB Kellen Moore’s numbers, and he isn’t projected to be taken until at least the fourth round, possibly as late as the seventh and it’s not even a stretch to say he won’t be selected.
Moore only measured in at 6’0”, 197 pounds at the combine, and his athleticism wasn’t impressive. The 22-year-old signal-caller ran a 4.94 40-yard dash, jumped a mere 27 inches in the vertical and 08’03” in the broad, did a 20-yard shuttle in 4.56 seconds and a 7.41 3-cone.
Compare him to Drew Brees—one of the consensus best QBs in the NFL—who came into the league at just 6’0”, 213 pounds. The Saints star’s combine figures were equally as unimpressive with a 40 time of 4.83, vertical of 32”, broad of 8’09”, 20-yard shuttle of 4.21 and 7.09 3-cone.
He was off the board at the end of the second round.
Here are a few teams that should be interested in using a pick on Moore and not roll the dice hoping that he will go undrafted.
Denver did well to land Peyton Manning in free agency. They have solidified the QB position for possibly the next three-to-four years. But they need a contingency plan and an exit strategy in case Manning becomes too injured to play or decides to retire after his contract.
Having an excellent young QB like Moore learn behind the best in the game is a great idea, and he could eventually assume the starting job after a few years on the bench.
It seems that every year, Ben Roethlisberger is sustaining injuries that ravage his body to the point of being unable to play or severely hindered towards the postseason.
Getting a great backup in the late rounds like Moore, who could win games when he is on the field, would be a wise decision by this organization.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was just given a fat contract, but he might not see it through if the Bills continue to struggle.
This team missed on their chance to get a franchise QB in the early portions of the draft, but they could work on developing Moore if they use a late pick.
