NFL Draft Grades: 5 NFL GMs Who Should Be Fired After Thursday's Debacle

Scott CarasikJun 7, 2018

While NFL prospects can earn or lose millions at the NFL scouting combine, NFL general managers earn or lose their jobs at the draft itself, especially in the first round where a few bad mistakes can set franchises back for years.

Some guys like Cleveland Browns' Tom Heckert may get a bad wrap early on, he certainly wasn't the General Manager who is on the worst of the worst list. The following teams made some of the worst decisions tonight and before and need to get reprimanded for making some horrible picks tonight.

These GM's made picks that got reactions anywhere from "head scratching" to just "WHY????" So sit back, crack back a beer and--if you're a fan of one of these teams--hope these general managers can redeem themselves in the second and third rounds tomorrow.

5) Kansas City Chiefs' Scott Pioli

1 of 5

1.11 Kansas City Chiefs--Dontari Poe (NT Memphis)

Since coming over from New England, Scott Pioli has an issue with out-thinking himself at times and taking players in the first round who aren't nearly as talented as their draft position would suggest.

Poe is a tremendous athlete, but had low college production and high pro bust potential. It leaves one wondering why he keeps taking players who are high risk, yet high reward players.

4) Miami Dolphins' Jeff Ireland

2 of 5

1.8 Miami Dolphins--Ryan Tannehill (QB Texas A&M)

Jeff Ireland is considered by many to be one of the worst GM's in the NFL right now, and he has earned another black mark with the selection of Tannehill.

Yes he may be the QB the Dolphins need, but Tannehill was not a top 10 player in this draft and did not deserve to be picked 8th overall. Even experts who love Tannehill's projection into the pros, know that he will take 1-2 years to reach that potential and Jeff Ireland may not have that much time left as a Dolphin.

3) New York Jets' Mike Tannenbaum

3 of 5

1.16 New York Jets--Quinton Coples (DE/OLB UNC)

The Jets had a good pick in Quinton Coples but the problem is, they could have had a great one.

With Melvin Ingram, Courtney Upshaw and Shea McClellin, they would have gotten much better value for their pick and much less bust potential than Coples provides. Frankly, the Jets seem like they're purposely attractive more and more characters for their sideshow and will once again make more headlines in 2012 than their talent would suggest.

If Coples ends up anything like Vernon Gholston, this could be Tannenbaum's last draft for the Jets.

2) San Francisco 49ers' Trent Baalke

4 of 5

1.30 San Francisco 49ers--A.J. Jenkins (WR Illinois)

Trent Baalke made one of the most baffling picks in the first round at number 30 with the huge reach of Jenkins.Yes, the 49ers have added a lot of receiver talent to a team that was starved for it and yes, Jenkins would be another great body at the position, but it's hard to think they couldn't have gotten a better player or gotten Jenkins much later.

While Jenkins was a solid player at Illinois, you have to wonder why Ballke didn't take a chance on a guy like Stephen Hill from Georgia Tech, Alshon Jeffery from South Carolina or Rueben Randle of Louisiana State. Each of those receivers offers more upside and could grow into a number one receiver for the Niners while Jenkins looks like a longterm number two.

1) Seattle Seahawks' John Schneider

5 of 5

1.15 Seattle Seahawks--Bruce Irvin (DE W. Virginia)

John Schneider is one of the younger general managers in the league and has so far led the Seahawks to a lot of questionable first round choices and could not have made a bigger reach than Irvin in the first round.

Irvin is an explosive pass rusher and he fits the Seahawks scheme, but he's not even a three down player and he's so small that he'll need to have a very niche role until he adds 10-15 pounds.

While that is possible, Irvin also has a very checkered past and as many red flags as anyone in the 2012 draft class.

Irvin is a longshot bet and was drafted with sure things like Melvin Ingram, Shea McClellin and Whitney Mercilus on the board.
