Justin Blackmon: Why He Is a Good Fit for the Jacksonville Jaguars

David LevinJun 7, 2018

The Jaguars' prayers have been answered.

Justin Blackmon now calls Jacksonville his NFL home.

After some shrewd moves, the Jaguars selected the Oklahoma State receiver with the fifth pick in the draft, and gave all of us fans something we have needed for some time—hope.

This was such an important move for the Jaguars, not only for the team, but for management and the fans. We all needed to make this draft count, we all needed to find a dynamic player who could lift our spirits and make us believe we could win again.

Here are some other reasons why this was such a good pick for the Jaguars.

Adds Another Set of Hands to the Receiving Corps

1 of 6

The team was horrible last year with its host of receivers. Blackmon was the best receiver on the board this year, and Jacksonville knew it had to get him.

Also, Blackmon will make the team and fans forget the drafting of players like R Jay Soward, Matt Jones and Reggie Williams.

Gene Smith and Shad Khan both hit a home run.

He Is an Electric Football Player

According to SidelineScouting.com, Blackmon had a tremendous career at Oklahoma State.

"He was a natural catcher who can pluck the ball on the run and effortlessly catches the ball away from his body."

Also, according to the report, he had 232 catches for 3,304 yards and 38 touchdowns over the past two years.

That is production no matter where you play football.

Shows the Jaguars Are Serious About Building a Winner

The parts are being assembled. It will take time, but the parts are being assembled.

If the defense comes back and plays at a high level and Gabbert takes another step forward, this will be a decent team.

Blackmon's drafting gives the team a shot of adrenaline. And helps Laurent Robinson on the other side.

It Will Help Sell Tickets

While having players on the field and having them produce is what the game is all about, it is a little more than that with the Jaguars.

This team needs to sell out games without having companies come in and bail the franchise out.

Having a new weapon like this, and other weapons to play with will bring the fans in. Hopefully, it will also lead to wins, which will take care of everything.

If they win, they will come.

Gives the Team Another Great Red Zone Threat

He does not have to be the faster runner on the field. All he has to do is separate from defenders, catch the ball and score.

He also needs to be able to jump in the end zone (like Victor Cruz) and take the ball away from the safeties, but most of all HE NEEDS TO SCORE TOUCHDOWNS.

Now with Laurent Robinson, who is 6'2" and tight end Marcedes Lewis, who is 6'6", the Jaguars have some players who can jump up in the end zone or on a post pattern and take the ball away from the defender.

Takes Some of the Load off Maurice Jones-Drew

MJD accounted for almost 50 percent of the Jacksonville offense last year.

The receivers were awful and the passing game, pitiful.

The current state of the passing game looks a whole lot better. And maybe the running game will be better because teams will have to zone in on the pass catchers.

Having sure hands is always a good thing.
