Colt McCoy: Future of Browns QB Unclear After Team Drafts Brandon Weeden in 1st

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Cleveland Browns incumbent starting QB Colt McCoy has had an emotionally eventful first round. That is, if he is paying attention, and if he is, he probably wishes he wasn't.

It started with a high for McCoy. The Browns made a trade to jump up from No. 4 to No. 3 to ensure they could draft Alabama running back Trent Richardson.

Richardson is a quarterback's dream. Besides his elite ability to run the ball, he is also an excellent blocker and receiver out of the backfield.

McCoy had to be loving that pick. It makes his job infinitely easier. The problem is that the draft later revealed it might not be his job at all.

With their second pick in the first round, the Browns made Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden the 22nd overall selection.

This is a terrible sign for McCoy's standing as Cleveland's starting QB, as Weeden will be 29 not long after next season starts.

You do not spend the 22nd pick in the draft on a 28-year-old if you do not expect him to be starting soon. And the Browns especially don't make that move.

They have way too many other holes on offense to afford the luxury of using a valuable first-round selection on a backup QB.

Now, this may not spell instant doom for McCoy as a first-stringer. Weeden is coming to the NFL from a spread offense, and it will be a steep learning curve to master the nuances of an NFL offense.

However, it is pretty clear that McCoy's days as the Browns' starter are numbered.
