2012 NFL Draft Grades: Early Winners from Raucous First Round

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

The world took time away from spinning to allow for the NFL draft. That is when a frantic first round took place.

You may excuse me because my head is still spinning from Robert Griffin's socks and the myriad of trades that have taken place so far.

The good people at ESPN sum up the trades that changed the landscape of the first round. Here is how the first few picks have gone down, and our down and dirty grades for each pick.

This is far too early in their career to aptly extrapolate progress, but it's fun to debate. So leave your grades in the comments below.

1. Indianapolis ColtsAndrew Luck, QB

Grade: A+

The obvious pick. They get the best QB around just as a legend leaves.

2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, QB

Grade: A+

They gave up a great deal to get him, but he will be huge for the Redskins, who have craved a superstar to take snaps.

3. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB

Grade: B+

The Browns trade up to guarantee they get an elite running back. I like this pick despite the myriad of picks exchanged.

He has the power and balance to be an immediate impact player.

4. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT

Grade: A

It's not flashy, but it's exactly what this franchise needs. They get the player that we all thought they should take, addressing an obvious need.

Not only that, but they pick up three late picks from the Browns in doing so. This was a solid move by the Vikings, who continue to build.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Blackmon, WR

Grade: B+

Despite such a fluid start to the draft, there was nothing but solid moves up top. The Jaguars get one of the last remaining elite athletes on the board.

More than that, they give their offense the playmaker they need at receiver. Blaine Gabbert will have a real shot with Blackmon, who works for every single ball.
