Jaguars-Buccaneers Trade: Breaking Down the Specifics of the Deal

Sigmund BloomJun 7, 2018

The top five has yet another trade, making three in only the first five picks. The 2012 NFL draft is certainly shaping up to be one of the most memorable in NFL history.

This time it's Jacksonville Jaguars GM Gene Smith giving up a pick to move up for a target, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik—adding to his masterpiece in his first draft—being completely in control.

Jacksonville has traded the 101st pick and the seventh pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the No. 5 pick, and selected Oklahoma State wideout Justin Blackmon.

Winners

Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State: After a postseason that saw some doubts creep into his top-five status, Blackmon gets selected in the top five after all.

Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame: Teams looking to acquire a top WR will have to pick Floyd earlier now that Blackmon has gone top five.

Blaine Gabbert, WR, Jacksonville: The Jaguars show a major commitment to their starting QB by getting him a No. 1 WR.

Tampa Bay: Morris Claiborne is a compelling player, but after missing out on Trent Richardson, we saw just how far the fall was to Claiborne from Richardson.

Losers

Jacksonville Jaguars: I'm sorry to say it, but Blackmon is not a game-changing receiver. He wasn't worth the move up in my opinion, and this will make two straight first-round tradeups the Jaguars come to regret.

Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU: Claiborne was considered a top-five pick for the last three months, but he falls out of the top five, and now we may see how many teams actually did have South Carolina CB Stephon Gilmore ahead of him if the Rams don't take him.
