Is Mark Sanchez Making the Right Move?
As James Froude said in Short Studies on Great Subjects' "Party Politics," "Experience teaches slowly, and at the cost of mistakes." In this case, Mark Sanchez is making the mistake thinking that he has the experience being ready enough for the NFL.
Now I in no way, shape, or form doubt that he can perform at a top level after watching him this past college season. At times he looked great, and I was ready to hop on the No. 6 train, 6 being his jersey number, and go straight to the No. 1 pick.
But there were also times where I was very skeptical in the sense that I am not so sure about his arm strength or his ability to make "those types of throws" that scream NFL-ready.
Nonetheless, if anything I believe that he is the most polished of the QBs coming out of college, mainly due to the fact that he went to USC and they have produced some very, very good QBs in recent years. The staff at USC is outstanding in coaching their players up in being very polished in everything that they do on the field. There are times where they look too good, and I wish we could swap them for the Detroit Lions.
But I think it's USC's success that got to Sanchez' head. Not calling him big-headed or egotistical, but overwhelmed with nostalgia, in the sense that they just got done beating one of the best teams in the country in Penn State—scoring five total TDs, four through the air and one on the ground.
Any ne would say that this would be a great day to cap off your season and make that leap to the NFL. But for head coach Pete Carroll, he hoped that his star QB would stay for this fifth and final year and be even more ready to do business and solidify his spot as a top five pick.
If anything, I think that there were only two people that influenced Sanchez' decision to leave: Tim "Ti-Vo" Tebow and Sam "I'm too Good" Bradford.
Once they both announced that they were going to stay for another year, that gave Sanchez the green light, now knowing that there were two fewer people that he would really have to beat out, and considering that they both have won the Heisman in the last two years would have given Mark a very steep hill to climb.
If I was a GM or anybody for that matter, I would certainly pick Tebow over Sanchez just for the fact that I could do more with him in different packages, as well as it would be a B#%ch trying to gameplan for somebody like that.
But I do think that Mark could end up being a top 10 pick, all depending on his combine of course, which I am eager to see, because if he is able to make throws, move well, and just have an overall good showing, he could impress somebody. I would expect the Chiefs to pick him up, and seeing how the Chiefs are also $40 million under the cap, they can make moves that can accommodate the young QB.
But if he does happen to make it out of the top 10, I could see him getting picked up by the Jets, because we all know how their QB situation is and how Brett Favre may or may not come back. Even though the 17th pick is pretty far away from the third, it would put him in a better position as the Jets have shown "hot flashes" of what could happen in the future.
But best of luck to Mark Sanchez; I just wanted to add my two cents.
