NFL Draft Rumors: Colts Should Trade 2nd-Round Pick for More Depth
We all know the Indianapolis Colts are going to be using their first pick on Andrew Luck, but what about after that?
The Colts hold the 34th overall pick (No. 2 in Round 2), which is essentially a first rounder with all of the talent this draft possess. That means there is more value with the pick than most years, and the Colts should take full advantage.
Sports Illustrated’s Peter King believes that the 3-4 scheme new head coach Chuck Pagano runs would be a disaster with the current roster construction. He suggests that the Colts may end up trading the pick to add more depth:
"In an ideal world, they'd be able to trade back from No. 34 (their second-round pick) to get two picks in the top 80, because they need quantity to play the 3-4. They need a nose tackle, a versatile inside linebacker who can stop the run, and a big defensive end. That's not too much to ask, is it?"
After Luck, this draft should be all about quantity over quality for the Colts.
The entire franchise has essentially cleaned house and the cupboard is now awfully bare. The coaching staff is all brand new. The time is now to get as many new guys on the roster as possible and build toward the future.
Besides, if the Colts can get some serious depth to shore up their defense, who says they can’t compete for an AFC South title in 2012.
It’s arguably the weakest division in football, with big question marks surrounding every team but the Houston Texans, a team that has a QB in Matt Schaub coming off a major foot injury that kept him out of action for the last two months of the season.
With a franchise QB in Luck that’s ready to be a star from Day 1, why not go for it this year? This is a win-now league and the brand new coaching staff is going to be under extreme scrutiny after only one year if the team can’t win at least six games.
Depth is the way to go and if they can land three picks in the top 80-to-100 in exchange for No. 34, there is no question the Colts are going to walk away from the 2012 draft with a big fat A+ attached to their draft grade.
