The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill

Bracing for what could be the most active NBA trading deadline in years, many teams have rumors buzzing around them regarding moves they may or may not make.

As always, I start with the champs in Boston, whom Stephon Marbury said yesterday had a “verbal agreement” in place to join if and when the Knicks release him.

The Boston Herald reports that Celtics’ Director of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge could not comment on the Marbury situation, yet he does believe Marbury can still play.

Ainge has reportedly told those close to the situation that Marbury would have to understand he would not receive major playing time, and his role would be similar to that of Sam Cassell’s, which is to only backup starting guard Rajon Rondo.

As for the Knicks, The NY Post reports today that management there are open to Marbury talking to other teams. Donnie Walsh stated “If we’re going to buy him out, it probably would help to have teams interested.”

Moving south, the Shawn Marion rumors continue to swirl greater than ever as the trade deadline approaches. The Toronto Sun reports today that Marion’s future team could be the Knicks, Raptors, Kings, or Mavericks if he is dealt.

The Sun went on to say that Marion’s former teammate, All-Star starting forward Amare Stoudemire, could ironically find himself suiting up for a new team after he returns from the All-Star festivities. Stay tuned…

Heading to Dallas, where the most coveted player on the Mavs roster by many teams is not Josh Howard, but the expiring contract of Jerry Stackhouse.

Stack hasn’t played since the start of the season, and while he has lobbied for more playing time, it looks like his wish to get moved may occur. There has been moderate interest from some Eastern Conference teams, though Dallas is expecting any move would have to be part of a multi-team package deal.
