Rating Real Madrid Players in Champions League Showdown with Bayern Munich

Dusan LucicJun 7, 2018

For the second year in row under Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid failed to reach the finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich's determination to win the Champions League at their own stadium was too strong, and they deservedly beat Real Madrid to continue making history.

After falling behind 2-1 in the first leg, Real Madrid won 2-1 at Bernabeu.

The penalty shootout had to determine the outcome of the semifinals. Los Blancos lost 3-1 on penalties, after missing three out of four penalties.

Here are the ratings for each Real Madrid player.

Goalkeeper

1 of 5

Iker Casillas pulled a number of incredible saves, and will be disappointed not to have saved Arjen Robben's penalty after getting his hands onto the ball.

The Spaniard saved two penalties in the shootout, and can feel let down by his teammates, who failed to convert three out of four penalties.

Overall, a good performance from the Real Madrid captain.

Rating: 8/10

Defense

2 of 5

Alvaro Arbeloa

The right-back was probably the best defensive player in Real Madrid. Franck Ribery was almost completely shut down by Arbeloa. Even when it looked like Ribery might get himself in a scoring chance, Arbeloa was quick to foul him or clear the ball away.

Rating: 7/10

Sergio Ramos

Despite playing in a lone role, Gomez caused a lot of trouble for the Real Madrid centre-back pairing. Ramos made a number of vital interceptions, but his overall game was not up to his standards. Missed a crucial penalty in the shootout, sending the ball way over the bar. A match to forget for Ramos.

Rating: 6/10

Pepe

Similar to Ramos, he couldn't stifle Gomez and never really looked comfortable facing the Germans. Worked his socks off to little effect.

Rating: 5/10

Marcelo

As expected, the Brazilian left-back caused a lot of trouble venturing forward, but failed to contain Robben's effect on the left flank. Looked a bit too nervous and his positioning was questionable at times.

Rating: 6/10

Midfield

3 of 5

Sami Khedira

Almost grabbed a goal in the early stages of the match, but his shot let him down. Had to cover for Marcelo when the left-back ventured forward. Made a number of interceptions, and can be happy with his display.

Rating: 7/10

Xabi Alonso

His fantastic range of passing was once again on display as he played his teammates in dangerous positions. Took more of a defensive role in the second half. Scored the only penalty for his team in the shootout.

Rating: 7/10

Mesut Ozil

The German playmaker has a tendency to disappear in big matches and this one seemed no different. Despite making several incredible passes, including the one that led to Cristiano Ronaldo's second goal of the night, he was largely ineffective in attack.

Rating: 6/10

Attack

4 of 5

After a dream start in which he scored two goals in just 15 minutes, the Portuguese was superbly marked by the Bayern defense. Missed the first penalty of the shootout as Manuel Neuer made a brilliant save to deny him.

Rating: 8/10

Karim Benzema

The Frenchman's clever movement was once again on display. Had a number of opportunities and nearly grabbed a goal, but was denied by the superb Neuer each time.

Rating: 7/10

Angel Di Maria

Caused a lot of trouble for David Alaba in the early stages of the match. His volley led to the first penalty of the match, which Ronaldo comfortably converted. However, the Argentine wasn't back to his best, and could have done more in attack.

Rating: 6/10

Substitutions

5 of 5

Kept things simple, but couldn't find the decisive pass. Missed a penalty in the shootout. He might have deserved more playing time.

Rating: 6/10

Esteban Granero

Came on for the last 10 minutes of the match, and failed to make an impact. Managed to get booked for a dive.

Rating: /

Gonazalo Higuain

Only played the second half of extra time. Didn't have enough time to make a considerable impact.
