Amile Jefferson: Top Recruit's Feel for Game Makes Him Good Fit with Duke

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Amile Jefferson has an array of skills to offer the Duke Blue Devils, but perhaps the skill that most intrigues Mike Krzyzewski is Jefferson's feel for the game.

Beyond Jefferson's size, athleticism, length, shooting touch and body control, he has already shown the ability to play within the game, showing an understanding well beyond his years.

Coach K has been known to like heady players. He's also been known to mold his players' mental acuity on the court. Imagine what a player like Jefferson could do in Coach K's system at Duke. He already has a head start.

Jefferson is also a very determined, focused basketball player who takes a business-like approach to the game. That could make him a favorite in the Duke camp right from the get-go. Not only is he unlikely to force shots and become overwhelmed, he's a guy that you won't have problems motivating, and those are the kind  of players Coach K loves and respects.

Jefferson would also help fill the void in the frontcourt left by the departures of Miles Plumlee and Michael Gbinije. He fills a need and could step in right away and contribute, with the ability to become a starter down the line.

Jefferson does come with his weaknesses, as does any recruit. He needs to fill out his frame to bang down low in the post and he needs work on his jump shot. But his demeanor and competitive spirit projects him to improve in these areas. He could even potentially be a small forward for the Blue Devils if he improves his perimeter game.

There are plenty of programs who covet Jefferson, but Mike Krzyzewski has to be drooling at the thought of landing the 6'7", 190-pound forward.
