Mel Kiper Jr. 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Biggest Whiffs in Guru's Latest Effort

Richard LangfordApr 25, 2012

NFL draft master Mel Kiper Jr. has made public his latest and final mock before the selection festivities get underway on Thursday night.

There are quite a few changes in this version from his last full mock. Those changes didn't eliminate the follicularly-blessed insider's gaffes. He still has a few head-scratchers in there.

He may very well end up being right on these bizarre projections, but that is because teams often make mind-numbingly odd draft picks.

Here are three teams that must avoid what Mel is preaching.

7. Philadelphia Eagles via Jacksonville: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

Kiper decided to incorporate a trade into this mock. He has the Eagles moving up from No. 15 to this spot to grab a DT that they need.

He doesn't offer up what the Eagles will have to swap to move up, but a quick look at the handy-dandy trade value chart reveals that the Eagles will likely have to at least offer their second-round selection and another later-round pick.

Is Cox worth it? Are the Eagles one DT away from being a Super Bowl team? I think not.

First is the fact that Cox is going to be victimized against the run. He is a talented player, but I'm leery of him at seven even if a team doesn't trade up to get him.

The other thing is that the Eagles have to improve their offensive line. They need their second pick. That way they'll have a premium pick for both lines.

10. Buffalo Bills: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

There are two problems with this pick. The first is fairly common: There is no way a team should draft Floyd in the top 10.

He has some serious red flags and multiple encounters with the law for alcohol-related issues. There is enough concern there that he is not worth the risk of that lofty selection.

The other problem is that he definitely is not worth it for the Bills. They have way too many holes in their secondary and on the offensive line to spend a pick on a WR with character concerns.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

Kiper has a solid foundation of reasoning for this pick, as he astutely notes that the Seahawks need an increased pass rush on the edge.

And Jones, while a bit of a reach at No. 12, is not a terrible selection in and of itself. That is until you see who Kiper has going off of his board with the next selection: South Carolina's Melvin Ingram.

There is no way a team should pass on Ingram for Jones. While Jones offers up better height, he does not have the same athleticism, strength, explosiveness, arsenal of pass-rush moves and instincts of Ingram.

If the Seahawks want a true difference maker on the edge, they will be much better served with Ingram.
