Case Keenum: Record-Breaking QB Will Be Lucky to Get Drafted

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

Case Keenum broke virtually every major record for a college quarterback while at Houston, but this week he will be lucky if he even gets drafted.

Keenum owns NCAA career records for passing yardage (19,217), total offense (20,114), touchdown passes (155), completions (1,546) and 300-yard games (39), and is also the first player in NCAA history with three 5,000-yard seasons. That said, he does not profile as anything more than a fringe roster player in the NFL.

At just under 6'1" and 208 pounds, Keenum does not have the size teams are looking for in a signal-caller at the NFL level. While he has the leadership qualities needed at quarterback and can command a huddle, he simply falls short in the "measureables" category.

At Houston, he played in a shotgun spread attack that made his reads much easier and also opened the field up for him. He also wasn't asked to throw the ball down-field all that often in Houston's offense. That said, he completed 71 percent of his passes in 2011 for 5,631 yards and 48 touchdowns in 2011, with just five interceptions.

Keenum's arm strength is below average and comes out of a lower slot that is ideal, which can lead to batted balls. He can get the ball out quickly, but deep passes tend to hang in the air and aren't terribly accurate.

The bottom line is that Keenum looks like a system quarterback who had an incredible college career, but who lacks the natural skills necessary to exceed at the NFL level. He seems like a great kid with solid intangibles, but sometimes that's not enough to make up for a lack of overall measureables.
