Tennessee Titans 2012 Draft: What to Expect from New GM Ruston Webster
Tennessee Titans fans, like most fanbases, aren't quite sure what to expect in the upcoming 2012 NFL draft.
Head coach Mike Munchak is entering his second year with that title and Ruston Webster has taken over his first stint as a general manager after being director of player personnel the two previous years. Mike Reinfeldt was promoted from general manager to CEO, putting him in charge of all team operations.
The passage of the general manager role from Reinfeldt to Webster should be an easy one.
In last year's draft the Titans showed no fear in drafting Jake Locker at No. 8 overall and then proved capable of finding great value throughout the draft—fast becoming a staple of Titans drafts under the Reinfeldt regime.
During Reinfeldt's five-year tenure as general manager, the Titans have consistently found quality players in the fourth round or later:
- Leroy Harris
- Jacob Ford
- Michael Otto
- William Hayes
- Lavelle Hawkins
- Gerald McRath
- Javon Ringer
- Jason McCourty
- Alterraun Verner
- Marc Mariani
- Colin McCarthy
- Karl Klug
- Tommie Campbell
There are seven current or former starters in the latter list of players and plenty of worthwhile depth players among them as well.
In hindsight, an argument can be made that the Titans had the best overall draft in 2011, having found perhaps the team's quarterback of the future, four starters and four more players capable of pushing for playing time.
What's their secret? According to Webster in an article on the Tennessean, it's quite simple:
"We’ll have a group of six players kind of lined up there the way we would take them, and when one of them gets taken, we’ll put someone else on that list and we’ll keep moving. … The important thing is everyone is on the same page.
"
Well if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Titans have roughly 21-27 players on their board with a first-round grade, leaving the door open to an assortment of possibilities.
But, rest assured Titans fans, Webster will find players ready to make an immediate impact from rounds one through seven.
Enjoy the draft everyone.
