Madden 2013: Massive Upgrades That Would Make Game Even More Addictive

Richard LangfordApr 25, 2012

There are a few tweaks that Madden 2013 could make on last year's version to make this addition the most addictive ever.

That may not actually be a good thing, since I've spent way too much time playing this game as it is, but is will certainly increase the entertainment potential.

Almost all of my Madden time has been devoted to online play. That is all well and good, but with a few tweaks to the franchise and superstar modes, these can become hour-consuming pursuits as well.

Here is what should be done.

Superstar Mode

Superstar mode has become an afterthought. Last year it felt like a novelty whose time had passed. It doesn't need to be that way. This became crystal clear when using the My Player mode in NBA 2K12

They have some features in that game, which really show the potential of this kind of mode.

More time needs to be spent on your player earning his spot on the team. Players should not be handed the starting role right away. They should have to earn it.

This can start with combine drills similar to the '08 version. The performance in those drills will play into when and where your player is drafted.

Once your player is on his new team, playing time should have to be earned with good performances. Players should be graded on all aspects of their position.

For instance, if you are a QB you should get points for making a good read, avoiding a sack, etc. Putting the focus on more subtle aspects of the position will make it far more rewarding.

Your player's playing time will then increase as he gets more points, and those points should also used to enhance your player's abilities.

And speaking of increasing your player's abilities, this cannot be made too easy. The harder it is to create a truly dominant player, the more rewarding it will be, and the more likely people will be to spend time in this mode.

Franchise Play

Franchise play used to be the staple of Madden. It has since been surpassed by online play. That is because the franchise play offers little that online play does not.

For starters, increased storylines should come into play here. The best way to do this is to have gamers assume certain roles when playing.

They could either choose to be the owner, GM or coach. Each position would come with different features. As an owner you would have to hire a GM and then live with the personal choices that GM made.

The owner would also be responsible for fan support and revenue. If the revenue drops too much, you would be forced to sell your franchise.

As a GM or coach, gamers would have to keep their bosses happy, or risk losing their job. GMs would be in charge of drafting and signing free agents, while coaches would have to set the starting lineups and motivating players.

In-game play would be the same, it would just be the stuff outside of the game that would be enhanced. This will make the game more interactive and more fun.
