Madden 2013: Top 5 Reasons Cam Newton Deserves Cover over Calvin Johnson

Eric BallApr 25, 2012

The 2013 Madden cover is down to the last two candidates, and it’s crystal-clear who should win it.

Cam Newton is a star in every sense of the word, an athlete who transcends just the NFL. Sure, Calvin Johnson puts up video game-like numbers, but he his popularity pales in comparison to “Killa Cam.”

With the final vote scheduled for 5:00 p.m. EST today on SportsNation, here is one last argument for Newton to grace the cover.

1. Style of Play is a Perfect Fit For Madden

Nothing is more fun than controlling a quarterback that is able to scramble away from multiple defenders to buy enough time to throw a 50-yard bomb down the field.

He is going to be the fastest rated QB (sorry Michael Vick) and will also have an arm strength rating in the 90s. He is the complete Madden package.

2. Incredible Charisma

The 22-year-old is all smiles off the field and that leads to one incredibly marketable guy. No offense to Megatron, but I’m not sure I could pick him out of a lineup.

3. Newton’s a QB

This may sound simplistic, but quarterback is by far the most recognizable position on the field. They are discussed at a much higher rate, with a wide variety of opinions about them being argued on a daily basis during the season.

After Year 1, Newton has captured the attention of every football fan in America.

4. Bigger Fanbase

Not only does Newton have Panther Nation to buy copies by the dozen (OK, I doubt anybody is shelling out for more than one copy), but he also has the Auburn faithful on his side.

Sure, the Lions have Johnson’s back, but Georgia Tech is no Auburn.

Toss in all the bandwagon fans around the country who are instant fans of the Rookie of the Year, and it’s clear that Newton is quickly emerging as one of the faces of the entire sport.

5. Projects to Have Bigger 2012

The arrow next to Newton’s 2012 projections is pointed straight up. If the Panthers can get him additional help at wide receiver, Newton’s numbers are going to be deadly.

Johnson, on the other hand, had ridiculous numbers in 2011 (1,681 yards, 16 TDs), and is going to need nothing short of a historic season to match those numbers.

Madden needs to select the guy who’s more fun to play as in the game, more marketable and is going to have the most success in 2012.

Add it all up and the choice is easy: Vote for Cam!
