Mel Kiper Jr 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Pinpointing Bigest Whiffs in Guru's Latest
There are some real head-scratching selections in Mel Kiper Jr.'s last full mock draft. It is hard to tell what the brain under that fabulous head of hair was thinking.
In this mock, he went two rounds deep, and, to be honest, I actually agree with him on a shockingly high percentage of picks.
There are a few, however, where he is way off the mark. Or at least it would seem that way. Who knows how the draft will transpire. There are always a few picks that stun everyone.
Think of Aaron Rodgers sliding down the board, or of Jake Locker going well before almost anyone anticipated.
Anyway, I will begrudgingly say that Kiper is typically one of the more accurate prognosticators of the draft, but if these following picks turn out to be right, then the NFL teams making them must be drinking from the same pool of crazy as Kiper.
No. 13 Arizona Cardinals: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
This is a decently popular pick in mock drafts, but it still doesn't make much sense. Floyd has talent and potential, but that potential is not great enough to make him worth the risk that his character concerns create.
But what really gets me about this selection for Kiper is his reasoning. Kiper:
"Floyd is a great complement to Larry Fitzgerald and will help Arizona maximize the options for Kevin Kolb. The offensive line could use help, but Floyd has proved that he'd be a good value here. Think of Atlanta getting Julio Jones to take some pressure off Roddy White last year. Floyd could fill a similar role.
"
If we are thinking of Atlanta, then we are seeing that this is not a good idea. Atlanta's passing yards went up last season, but their record and rushing yards went down.
You don't spend the No. 13 pick on a player where the plan is for him to be a compliment to someone. They can find a compliment in the second round.
Arizona will be in a position to draft one of the higher-rated offensive linemen in this draft, and that is exactly what they should do.
Speaking of those highest-rated offensive linemen....
No. 17 Cincinnati Bengals: David DeCastro, G, Stanford
My fault with this pick is not the Bengals taking DeCastro. It is the fact that he is not going to be around until No. 17.
In fact, he is going to be drafted right where Kiper has another head-scratcher—at No. 11 to the Kansas City Chiefs. He has the Chiefs taking LB Luke Kuechly there. That is earlier than the LB who survived on instincts and lacks athleticism will go.
No. 11 is a high pick to spend on an interior offensive lineman, but the position is becoming more valuable in the NFL, and the pay of guards reflects that.
DeCastro is also the real deal. He is a phenomenal drive blocker, and he is a menace when he is pulling.
He is a perfect fit for a Kansas City team that loves to run the ball, but has an aging offensive line.
No. 44 Kansas City Chiefs: Devon Still, DT, Penn State
Still is falling down draft boards, but it is foolish to think that the player a few months ago many had in the top 10 will fall all the way to No. 44.
Kiper has four true DTs going off of his board before Still. That is not going to happen. At the most, Still will see only two other DTs get called before he finds his destination. They are Dontari Poe and Fletcher Cox.
To still be on the board at No. 44, the Rams and Panthers will have had to passed on Still with two picks and the Broncos and Eagles once. That is not going to happen.
