Andrew Luck: Indianapolis Colts Overhaul Doesn't End with Stud QB

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

Andrew Luck will be a nice start to the 2012 NFL draft for the Indianapolis Colts, but the team has to nail the rest of its picks this year if it wants him to be successful.

On Tuesday, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson confirmed that the team will take Luck with the No. 1 pick in the draft on Thursday (h/t ESPN.com). While the Stanford quarterback would be a fantastic way to start any draft, Grigson has a serious rebuilding project on his hands, and this year's entire draft is incredibly important.

Indianapolis has 10 picks this year, and after quarterback, it has serious needs at tight end, wide receiver, nose tackle, cornerback and offensive line. That's a lot of holes to fill.

Of those 10 selections, the Colts own the second pick in the second round, the top pick in the third round, the second pick in the fourth round and the first pick in the fifth round.

At each of those spots, Indianapolis needs to get a player who can help the team now. If Grigson misses on any of those, the Colts may be right back at the top of the draft next season.

Luck is a phenomenal quarterback prospect. He is clearly the best signal-caller to enter the NFL in more than a decade. His fantastic tools, polished skills and cerebral approach to the game set him far above others at his position. But his development will be directly related to the level of talent surrounding him. And right now the Colts simply don't have much.

Indianapolis currently boasts an aging Reggie Wayne at receiver, with guys like Austin Collie, Donnie Avery, Quan Cosby, Jarred Fayson and Jeremy Ross taking up roster space. Wayne isn't what he once was and the rest of those guys won't exactly strike fear into the hearts of opposing defenses.

The Colts offensive line is also a work in progress. Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana will both be headed into their second seasons, but with guys like Ryan Diem and Jeff Saturday no longer with the team, the interior of the line is a mess.

After cutting Pro Bowler Dallas Clark loose, tight end is also a spot that needs attention.

Defensively, Indianapolis is in the midst of a switch to head coach Chuck Pagano's 3-4 scheme. Arguably the most important position in a 3-4 defense is nose tackle, and there is no one currently on the team's roster who could adequately fill that role.

The Colts have decided to take Luck with the top pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and that is a great way to start things off. But now the hard work will begin for Grigson and the rest of his front office.
