Robert Griffin III: Why the Rookie QB Is Far More Valuable Than Andrew Luck

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

The assumption is that Andrew Luck will be taken with the No.1 overall pick on Thursday, leaving the more valuable quarterback in Robert Griffin III to be taken shortly thereafter.

For months we have dissected these two quarterbacks with the general consensus resting comfortably on the opinion that Andrew Luck is better than Robert Griffin III, but by a slim margin.

You might get an assessment that looks something like: Luck is clearly the No. 1 pick, but RG3 is no slouch and would be the first pick if Luck wasn't around.

In that hypothetical world where Luck isn't throwing spirals on a dime, RG3 is the celebrated No. 1 pick, but he is going No. 2 in 2012, or so we presume.

So, what's the drop off? I mean, that has to be the question as we sit just days before the Colts are officially on the clock.

Luck and Griffin will assuredly go one and two, and it's time to debate what that chasm really means. I am ready to say that it's not all that much, and Griffin will be a great quarterback in this league, making the two careers all the more intriguing to watch.

Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the draft, and the most NFL-ready, coming in with the size, footwork and experience that will pay dividends early.

The Colts may lose more games than the Redskins, but that is more of a sign that Indianapolis is in the beginning process of a rebuild and means nothing in the grand scheme of Luck and his maturation process.

While Luck may have everything, Griffin has almost as much. I would also argue that he has more than the presumptive No. 1 pick in the arm strength area.

He can also hit the windows that Luck is renowned for. The Stanford star has a 71.3 percent completion rate in 2011, and RG3 had a 72.4 percentage rate for Baylor.

Accuracy and arm strength is right on par with the best in the land and then there is foot speed. This is not to knock Luck who moves very well for his size and stature, but Griffin can flat out fly.

That advantage makes way for the many that Luck enjoys, but this all means one thing—the Washington Redskins are getting one hell of a value at the No. 2 pick in this amazing draft class.

I am willing to sit back and acknowledge that Luck and Griffin will both be Pro Bowl quarterbacks and enjoy long and fruitful careers.

Griffin has a big arm, tremendous speed and an accurate eye. Consider we haven't even touched upon his winning smile and infectious personality that will spark the fan base.

It's a close race, but I give Griffin the edge.

The fact that Washington is getting a quarterback that would be a No. 1 pick any other year with the second pick makes Griffin far more valuable.
