Tottenham Hotspur Circus in Full Swing: Robbie Keane Next?

Andrew McNairJan 26, 2009

On the day Tottenham Hotspur re-signed yet another player within a year of letting him go, one must ask when Robbie Keane will show up at White Hart Lane.

Seven months ago, Pascal Chimbonda walked away from Spurs, signing for Sunderland along with Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque in a £17 million deal, saying he looked forward to challenging for the title within five years. Yes, Pascal has never been the most stable of characters.

The Frenchman left because he was being played out of position (left back) if at all as Spurs had signed Alan Hutton. It didn’t take long for the controversial one-cap wonder to head for the exit. Not for the first time in his career either. He left Wigan Athletic, as he was too good for them, so how he ended up in the North East is anybody’s guess.

Amazingly, though, after just 11 Barclays Premier League games at the Stadium of Light, 29-year-old Chimbonda is back in a deal that is claimed equals what Sunderland paid for him.

Well that helps, somewhere between £2 and £15 million then.

But what has changed? Vedran Corluka currently holds the right back spot while Alan Hutton remains injured on the sidelines. So it must be the Harry factor. Maybe the Spurs boss thought he was getting Kenwyne Jones?

Harry Redknapp has now re-signed two players deemed surplus to Spurs requirements within the last year, the first being the return of Jermain Defoe. From the outside it almost looks like Harry is taking the Mickey.

I bet the Spurs board are well chuffed.

So would it really be such a shock to see Robbie Keane lining up in a white shirt come February. I’d not hesitate on putting a few quid on it.

In the end, it just goes to show that nothing is permanent in football and Portsmouth’s former Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul must be positively salivating at the thought of a call from his former boss.
