2012 NFL Draft Predictions: Which Teams Will Surprise on Draft Day?
Every year during the first round of the NFL draft there are a couple teams that surprise everybody with the direction they decide to go with their pick. It usually causes changes throughout the rest of the round as teams shuffle big boards to account for the unexpected pick.
Let's take a look at three teams that have a good chance to fall into that category this time around, making all the mock drafts created ahead of time moot pretty quickly.
The general consensus is that the Dolphins will take quarterback Ryan Tannehill. While a young QB would be a nice addition, Tannehill would be a reach at No. 8. With Matt Moore and David Garrard already on the roster, Miami should strongly consider a wide receiver instead.
It's starting to look more and more like Justin Blackmon could be on the board when the Dolphins pick, and he would provide far more value than Tannehill. He's the top receiver on the board and should have plenty of Pro Bowl games in his future.
Even if Blackmon is off the board, Michael Floyd is a much safer pick than the Texas A&M signal-caller. Don't be surprised if the Dolphins end up passing on Tannehill on draft day.
Wide receiver and offensive tackle are the two positions that have been mentioned most when talking about the Bills. A dark horse area of need they will also need to address at some point is the secondary, both at cornerback and safety.
Dre Kirkpatrick and Stephon Gilmore are the corners most likely to be on the board. At safety, Kirkpatrick's Alabama teammate Mark Barron would be the only guy worth considering. All three would be upgrades for an improved Bills defense.
Considering the wide receiver class has plenty of depth and there should still be an offensive tackle or two with some value in Round 2, Buffalo would be wise to address its secondary needs first.
The positions vary, but the Titans are targeting defense in most opening round mock drafts. Even though Tennessee does have a couple weaknesses on that side of the ball, don't completely count out an offensive skill position player.
One player that's been on the rise lately is Stanford tight end Coby Fleener. Strong workouts have caused teams to take a second look at him. A reliable red zone target like him can really round out an offense nicely, and the Titans don't have one.
There are only two tight ends with the ability to have an instant impact and it's no guarantee Dwayne Allen will still be available when the Titans pick next. That makes Fleener an intriguing option.
