Janzen Jackson: 6 Biggest Strengths and Weaknesses of 2012 NFL Draft Prospect

David LevinApr 24, 2012

Arrests, questions about character and a poor 40-yard time at the combine in Indianapolis.

Is it fair to say Janzen Jackson has a steep hill to climb before he even hears his name called, if it is called on Thursday night?

The safety from McNeese State (after being dismissed from the University of Tennessee) is not likely to hear his name called until Saturday. There are too many questions regarding him as a person and not as much as a player.

Still, when you play in the SEC and face the likes of Alshon Jeffery and Rueben Randal consistently, scouts are going to take a look at you.

Here are some strengths and weaknesses of Jackson's game, according to cbssportsline.com.

He Has Legit NFL Talent

1 of 6

He is lean (6') and needs to put some pounds on (at 188 pounds), but scouts think he is a true talent, so they will take a chance on him.

He possesses good straight-line speed, fluid hips to turn and run and explosiveness out of his breaks. He will have to show he can run at that speed with added weight as well.

Watches Your Every Move

Jackson has good vision and anticipation as a free safety. Jackson reads the quarterback's eyes and gets an excellent break on the ball.

If he can follow the quarterback before the play and then turn his attention to the receiver on the route, it will allow him to defend better on the passing route.

Big Hitter for Such a Small Guy

3 of 6

The scouting report says Jackson is a considerably bigger hitter than his slight frame would lead you to believe.

He closes quickly on defenders and generates an explosive collision on impact that can separate the football.

This will be good when he is covering in nickel and dime packages.

Poor 40-Yard Dash Time

4 of 6

Showing off his speed did not help him at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

Jackson turned in sub-standard times of 4.57 and 4.60 seconds in the 40-yard dash that will raise some red flags for scouts. At 6" and 188 pounds, he would ideal as a special teams player, but his speed may also become a question.

Arrest Record May Hurt Him

5 of 6

Jackson was involved in off-the-field legal issues while in school in Knoxville. It may be a question of his character.

According to cbssportsline.com, Jackson arrested, along with two other Tennessee players, for taking part in an armed robbery of a convenience store November 11, 2009 in Knoxville. He was ultimately released when prosecutors determined that he did not know the crime was being committed.

He Is Slight of Body

6 of 6

At 188 pounds, he is a bit thin, but that can be overcome with more work in the weight room.

He takes a physical beating while trying to deliver big blows, which could ultimately lead to injury.

Right now, he is projected by cbssportsline.com to be a seventh-round selection or a free agent.
