NFL Draft Order 2012: 5 Teams That Should Trade Back in Round 1
The NFL Draft is almost upon us. There are teams that should be looking to move back in the first round; to stockpile more draft picks for the future.
Here are some scenarios that make trading down advantageous.
If a team does not think that a player is worthy of the value of the pick it owns, it should look to deal the selection.
This could be the case this year because most scouts feel there are only six elite talents in this year's draft. Other talented players are not considered elite due to the uncertainty how their game will translate to the NFL.
Teams may also trade down if an available player is wanted by other teams. This is what the St. Louis Rams have already done this offseason.
They traded the second-overall selection to the Washington Redskins, with the overwhelming opinion being that pick would become Robert Griffin III.
There will be many trades in this year's draft that threaten to completely shatter the mock drafts of everyone.
Here are a few of the teams that may be trading their selection come draft day.
Minnesota Vikings
1 of 5The Minnesota Vikings hold the third pick in this year's draft. This means that if they hold onto their selection, they will be taking the first non-quarterback.
The wide-spread thought for months is that the Vikings would stay at No. 3 and select Matt Kalil, a solid tackle out of USC.
In my eyes this isn't the best scenario for the team.
The Vikings have a major need at corner back. Minnesota's need for quality cover-men is greater than that of other teams across the league.
This is due to their competition from inside the division.
The Vikes will be facing off against Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler and Matthew Stafford six times this season.
If the Vikings don't upgrade their secondary then the trio of highly talented NFC North quarterback's will be torching Minnesota all season.
The Vikings should be targeting lock down corner back Morris Claiborne, out of LSU with their selection. They may be able to move down a few picks, thus gaining a couple draft picks, and still be in position to grab Claiborne.
Minnesota also has a ton of other needs, if the team can trade back and pick up more selections they could add more players to fill holes.
Kalil will be a solid NFL tackle but he isn't the prospect that Jake Long or Joe Thomas were when they entered the league. If the team has the chance to move down to address other issues then they should not hesitate to pull the trigger.
Jacksonville Jaguars
2 of 5The Jacksonville Jaguars have the bad luck of owning the seventh selection in this year's draft.
This pick is unlucky because the six elite prospects will probably be off the board when it is their turn to pick. The selection of Ryan Tannehill in the top six is probably the only way that the Jaguars will be able to get their hands on a top-tier player.
This means that the Jaguars may be reaching for a player with their pick.
According to sources, the Jags like cornerback Stephon Gilmore out of South Carolina a lot.
Gilmore will be available when the Jags are on the clock but they would be better off trading down and acquiring more selections later in the draft.
The Jags should be able to trade back a few slots and still be able to select Gilmore or Dre Kirkpatrick, who have been fighting for the distinction of second best corner in the draft.
If Tannehill falls to No. 7 then a team may try to make a deal with the Jags before the Miami Dolphins, who pick right after the Jaguars, get the chance to take him.
The Jags front office must be praying that Tannehill falls to them at seven. It will be interesting to see if the Tannehill's rising draft stock entices a team to pay the large bounty it would take to make the trade to secure him.
It appears as if the Jags are looking to move down.
If they did move down then they could turn the selections acquired in the trade into a young receiver to help out Blaine Gabbert and a defensive end to complement Jeremy Mincey.
Kansas City Chiefs
3 of 5The Kansas City Chiefs have the 11th selection. Most experts have them selecting linebacker Luke Kuechly, who finished his career with 532 tackles the most in ACC history.
Kuechly should have a very solid career as he is a high character guy with a natural feel for the game. You don't finish your career with the most tackles in conference in history without a very high football IQ.
The Chiefs would have an improved defense with Kuechly on it but the team has a bigger need at defensive tackle.
Luckily for them there are plenty of talented DT's in the draft this year.
They could move down and still grab one of the better defensive tackles in the draft.
If they were to move down 10 slots or so, then they would accumulate a couple more draft picks and would still be able to grab a DT with a high ceiling.
Defensive tackles Michael Brockers and Dontari Poe may be available later in the round for the Chiefs to pick.
The selections acquired from moving down could be used on an extra defensive lineman to add depth to the unit.
Arizona Cardinals
4 of 5The Arizona Cardinals have the 13th selection and need to address their offensive line.
Matt Kalil, the top-ranked tackle, will be long gone by the time the Cardinals are on the clock.
If the second-ranked tackle, Riley Reiff, is also off the board then Arizona may be in a tricky spot.
It may be a bit of a reach to take Stanford tackle, Jonathan Martin at 13. Martin would be a great pick at 23, but 13 is just a little too early in the draft to take him.
Another product of Stanford, guard David DeCastro should also be available. But guards are rarely drafted in the first round, let alone 13th overall. For what it's worth, DeCastro may be the best prospect at guard in a decade.
If the Cards do not think there is an offensive lineman worth the 13th selection, then they should move down and address the offensive line at that point.
They could turn those extra selection(s) into a young wide receiver or another edge pass rusher.
Ultimately, the Cards must address their offensive line in the draft if they hope to keep Kevin Kolb healthy in 2012.
If players like Michael Floyd or Fletcher Cox, who many consider to be the best defensive tackle in the draft, fall to the Cardinals then their phone may be ringing with good offers on draft night
Philadelphia Eagles
5 of 5The Philadelphia Eagles will be looking for a tackle and defensive line help at this year's draft.
Depending on the Eagles' draft board, they could probably move down a handful of picks and still grab someone they have highly ranked.
In the process they could add a pick to address a position like cornerback or wide receiver
There likely won't be an offensive tackle that is worthy of the 15th selection, as Matt Kalil and Riley Reiff will more than likely both be gone.
There will be plenty of solid defensive line prospects available later in the first round. Someone like USC's Nick Perry could make sense for Philadelphia in tail-end of the second round.
